South Nation Conservation Low Water Conditions

As of May 30, 2016, South Nation Conservation (SNC) issued a precipitation triggered level I low water condition encompassing SNC’s entire jurisdiction.

Environment Canada climate stations in Ottawa, Cornwall and Brockville indicated the total precipitation for the last three months to be 118.6mm, 85.8mm and 133.1mm, respectively, compared to 2015, where the totals were 234.5mm, 247.2mm and 279.2mm, respectively.  Currently, the precipitation levels for June are 50% less than what they were in 2015.

Firefighters Participate in Spill Response Training to Protect Local Drinking Water Sources

Twelve firefighters across the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville participated in Spills Response Training on June 25 2016.

The training compliments a previous session that was offered by South Nation Conservation (SNC) in 2008 and 2009 and this year was offered in partnership with the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Region.

Come on out for a Day of Family Fun and Healthy Hike in Berwick June 26!

South Nation Conservation (SNC) in partnership with Chalmers United Church, is inviting families to come to Berwick on June 26 for a fun filled day of family fun!

The day will start with a hike and geocaching tutorial at Warwick Forest at 10:30 a.m., followed by a free lunch with music and children’s games at McIntosh Park Conservation Area from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Call for applicants: Appointment of Chair Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Committee

The Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Committee has been in place since 2007. The committee members represent  many public and private sectors including municipalities, industry, small business, environmental interests, agriculture and the general public. Many of the original members still sit on the committee today and have worked together to ensure that municipal drinking water sources in the Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Region are protected.

Drop a line at SNC’s 8th Annual Youth Fish Camp

Cass Bridge Conservation Area in Winchester will be the site of South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 8th annual free Youth Fish Camp, from July 6-7.

“Cass Bridge along the South Nation River has the look and feel of a classic summer fishing hole,” said SNC Communications Assistant Holly Nyenkamp.

But participants aged 10-15 will have to be on their toes too. Using provided gear, they’ll learn the rules, where to drop a line, selecting equipment, baiting – including fly tying, and casting.

SNC Celebrates New Forested Land Acquisition

Fifty six acres of forested land bought as a gift on Christmas Eve, 1973, has become the latest parcel acquired by South Nation Conservation (SNC) to be preserved for posterity.

The Blom Property in the Township of North Dundas was officially welcomed into the fold of SNC public lands during a ceremony at the site that took place Saturday, June 4. The event included a few words from the Blom family, a ribbon cutting, tour of the property, refreshments and cake.

150 Trees Planted as Part of Buffer Enhancement Project in Hammond

On Monday May 30, in partnership with the City of Clarence-Rockland and JML Development, approximately 150 trees and shrubs were planted in Hammond as part of a buffer enhancement project to naturalize a municipal drain. Red oak, white pine, Norway spruce, red osier dogwood and speckled alder were among the tree and shrub species planted; the area will also be seeded with a wildflower and grass mix.
