South Nation Conservation cautions that watercourses are expected to rise over the next week due to above-freezing temperatures and rainfall.

Environment Canada forecasts periods of rain throughout the week. Above-freezing temperatures and rain will maintain higher river levels and flows throughout the South Nation jurisdiction.

At present, streamflows are typical for this time of year. Any increase in water levels is not a concern at this time; however, nuisance flooding in low-lying areas may be observed.

Remember… It’s your grassroots conservation organization, overseen by a locally appointed Board of Directors. That’s the message being conveyed by South Nation Conservation (SNC) as it appeals for new volunteers to help out in many of the Authority’s activities.

Environment Canada forecasts snow heavy at times and mixed with ice pellets before changing over to freezing rain by this evening. Above-freezing temperatures and rain is expected by Thursday morning, which will increase river levels and flows throughout the South Nation jurisdiction. 

More than 75 geocaching enthusiasts attended the launch Feb. 13 of South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) Historical Geo-Passport event held at Sand Road Maple Farm, in Moose Creek.

As part of the historical geo-passport, SNC and Geocachers of Eastern Ontario introduced a new collectable geocoin to mark the occasion; the coin features Grants Mills, the first milling location along the South Nation River dating back to 1801.

In addition to Conservation Areas (CA), SNC works with Municipal partners to keep a number of parks and trails groomed, helping increase winter recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $5,000 from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (FEF) for Environmental Education Projects.

“We are thrilled that TD has selected SNC to receive this funding to support environmental education”, said SNC Chair Doug Thompson.

The funding announcement and cheque presentation took place at the TD branch in Chesterville. Projects under the TD FEF Environmental Education stream work to make an impact on the local environment through public education.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is ending the Watershed Conditions: Water Safety Statement issued January 29, 2016.

Water levels throughout the South Nation jurisdiction are returning to normal conditions based on Environment Canada’s present weather forecasts. 

SNC continues to advise residents to use caution near watercourses. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

During the winter season, SNC samples snow conditions in the watershed twice a month. At each of the seven weather stations, the depth and weight of snow is carefully measured and recorded along with ground conditions. This information is used to calculate the amount of melt water or potential runoff contained in the snow. The data also helps estimate agricultural productivity, fertilizer requirements, waterfowl populations, and livestock and wildlife survival.
