During the winter season, SNC samples snow conditions in the watershed twice a month. At each of the seven weather stations, the depth and weight of snow is carefully measured and recorded along with ground conditions. This information is used to calculate the amount of melt water or potential runoff contained in the snow. The data also helps estimate agricultural productivity, fertilizer requirements, waterfowl populations, and livestock and wildlife survival.

South Nation Conservation cautions that watercourses are expected to rise Sunday and Monday due to above-freezing temperatures and rainfall.

Environment Canada forecasts above-freezing temperatures and rain for this weekend and next week.  The forecasted weather will cause snow to melt and runoff to watercourses, which will increase river levels and flows throughout the South Nation jurisdiction. 

South Nation Conservation (SNC) recently hosted a delegation of six representatives from the Nanchang Urban Planning & Design Institute, located in the Jiangxi Province of China. Staff shared knowledge and highlighted local partnerships with Municipalities to promote sustainable urban planning, flood protection and prevention, stormwater management and water quality monitoring.

SOUTH NATION JURISDICTION ALONG THE OTTAWA RIVER – South Nation Conservation cautions residents in the Township of Alfred-Plantagenet that water levels in the Ottawa River will remain high for the upcoming weekend.

Raisin-South Nation Source Protection program reached a milestone with the completion and signing of the first Risk Management Plan.

“SNC is pleased to announce the signing of the first Risk Management Plan”, said Tessa Di Iorio, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) Hydrogeologist and Risk Management Official.

Through funding provided by the Eastern Ontario Water Resources Committee (EOWRC), South Nation Conservation (SNC) is improving the monitoring program with exciting new tools.

The WISKI program, also known as Water Information System Kisters, captures relevant, real time data regarding flood forecasting.

“The new tools will enhance SNC’s current data monitoring network by integrating water quality/quantity data with forest data and biological data on fish and bugs found in our watercourses,” says Golam Sharif, SNC Water Resource Analyst.

Grassland restoration work recently undertaken by South Nation Conservation (SNC) to promote the recovery of the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark in Eastern Ontario, two birds that are Species at Risk is now complete.
