Drop a line at SNC’s 8th Annual Youth Fish Camp

Cass Bridge Conservation Area in Winchester will be the site of South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 8th annual free Youth Fish Camp, from July 6-7.

“Cass Bridge along the South Nation River has the look and feel of a classic summer fishing hole,” said SNC Communications Assistant Holly Nyenkamp.

But participants aged 10-15 will have to be on their toes too. Using provided gear, they’ll learn the rules, where to drop a line, selecting equipment, baiting – including fly tying, and casting.

SNC Celebrates New Forested Land Acquisition

Fifty six acres of forested land bought as a gift on Christmas Eve, 1973, has become the latest parcel acquired by South Nation Conservation (SNC) to be preserved for posterity.

The Blom Property in the Township of North Dundas was officially welcomed into the fold of SNC public lands during a ceremony at the site that took place Saturday, June 4. The event included a few words from the Blom family, a ribbon cutting, tour of the property, refreshments and cake.

150 Trees Planted as Part of Buffer Enhancement Project in Hammond

On Monday May 30, in partnership with the City of Clarence-Rockland and JML Development, approximately 150 trees and shrubs were planted in Hammond as part of a buffer enhancement project to naturalize a municipal drain. Red oak, white pine, Norway spruce, red osier dogwood and speckled alder were among the tree and shrub species planted; the area will also be seeded with a wildflower and grass mix.

SNC Hosts Specialist High Skills Major Agriculture Program Participants

South Nation Conservation (SNC) partnered with the Dundas Federation of Agriculture, North Dundas District High School and Tagwi Secondary School for an Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship ICE Training Project. ICE Project is a component of the Specialist High Skills Major Agriculture Program.

SNC hosted program participants on May 18th for a day of problem solving and solution generation in regards to real world, sector related issues. The challenge for the 2016 group was “How to increase the adoption of best management practices in the South Nation watershed?”

SNC Enters Twinning Agreement with Watershed-based Organizations from Quebec and France

South Nation Conservation (SNC) signs twinning charter with two watershed-based organizations, SMAGE des Gardons from France and l'Organisme de concertation pour l'eau des bassins versants de la rivière Nicolet (COPERNIC) in Quebec, as a cooperative approach for integrated water resource management.

An agreement was in place between COPERNIC and SMAGE des Gardons to share expertise between the two watersheds and SNC was asked to join the partnership in 2014.

SNC Extended Office Hours Returning May 19

Returning May 19, the South Nation Conservation (SNC) administration office in Finch will remain open Thursdays until 7 p.m. to provide clients seeking permits and approvals with an extended service option.

For the past two years, extended office hours will continue beginning the May long-weekend until Thanksgiving.

“With the greater demand for permits and approvals handled by SNC staff, in the spring, summer and early fall, the extended hours help provide residents with effective customer service” explained Carl Bickerdike, Acting Team Lead, Corporate Services.

Groups from Scouts du Canada Plant 500 Trees in La Nation Municipality

On Saturday, May 7, 500 trees were planted on Municipal land, in partnership with La Nation Municipality and l ’Association des scouts du Canada. SNC partnered with Ontario Power Generation to fund this event. In 2016, La Nation Municipality committed to planting a 40 acre parcel of land over a 3 year period which will contribute to future wildlife habitat and increased forest cover.

SNC Works with Residents, Organizations and Municipalities to Plant Trees

It’s that time of year… time to plant trees.

For over 20 years, South Nation Conservation (SNC) has offered community tree planting services within its jurisdiction. This year, SNC is pleased to announce that over 140,000 trees will be planted, contributing to the region’s forest cover.

“Community and residential tree planting is a great way to help boost local forest cover,” says Cheyene Ramsey SNC Forestry Technician.” “Tree planting not only helps increase property value and local forest cover, but promotes forest connectivity and wildlife habitat.”
