SNC Announces New General Manager

For the first time in close to 30 years, there’s about to be a change in staff leadership at South Nation Conservation (SNC).

As of May 1, 2017, SNC General Manager Dennis O’Grady will be retiring and handing over his responsibilities to Angela Coleman, SNC’s current Director of Property Management and Approvals.

SNC Ends Drought Advisory

As of December 7, 2016, South Nation Conservation (SNC) has lifted the 6-month Drought Advisory triggered by a dry spring and summer.

Since June, SNC’s Water Response Team composed of representatives from municipal and provincial government, the agricultural community, and other special interest groups frequently met to discuss the drought conditions and the noted impacts to the community.

SNC Hires 14 Recent Graduates

South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) is pleased to hire 14 recent graduates to give them experience in their field right out of their post-secondary education.

“We’re proud to be in the position of giving jobs to talented recent graduates,” said SNC General Manager Dennis O’Grady, adding that “the internship program is a great way to assess future full-time employees and to give them the opportunity to gain experience.”

SNC Partners with Soil & Crop to Host Workshop

South Nation Conservation is teaming up in early January with the Ontario Soil & Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) to host an Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) workshop over two evenings.

The two-part workshop delivered in English will be held January 10 and January 17, 2017 at SNC’s office in Finch, 6-9 p.m., on both evenings. Other workshops will occur in Casselman (in French) and in Kemptville in January.

PUBLIC INVITED TO OPEN HOUSE ON FLOOD RISK MAPPING

Extreme weather makes the news frequently. Locally, South Nation Conservation (SNC) reduces risk to life and damage to property by providing local municipalities and the public advance notice of potential flooding.

Flood forecasting responds to weather events experienced in a watershed and compares them over time. Flood forecasting and warning is an important response to intense precipitation events.

Bear Brook Subwatershed Evaluation Results to Guide Stewardship Efforts

South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) recently completed the Bear Brook Subwatershed Report Card giving an assessment ranging from fair to excellent for forest cover, wetland cover, and surface water quality for the area. 

Named for the plentiful number of bears which once foraged on acorns in the area, Bear Brook is an important Subwatershed within SNC’s 4,384 km2 jurisdiction. It comprises parts of the rural east end of the City of Ottawa, City of Clarence-Rockland, Township of Russell, and Nation Municipality.

Water Protection Signs Hit the Road

Eastern Ontario motorists are awash in new highway signs intended to promote drinking water protection.

The signs are among initiatives arising from Source Water Protection efforts ongoing in the province for close to a decade. There are 19 Source Protection Committees (SPC) across Ontario which administer specific regions according to drainage systems.

Something Fishy Has Arrived in Rockland!

St. Patrick Catholic School now has its very own Stream of Dreams mural! From October 18 to 20, 2016 each student and teacher learned all about their local watershed and how to keep water clean for people and fish, and then painted the beautiful Dreamfish that now are part of the amazing mural outside their school.
