South Nation Conservation cautions that watercourses are expected to rise this week due to above-freezing temperatures and rainfall.

Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts above-freezing temperatures and rain for this week.  The forecasted weather will cause snow to melt and runoff to watercourses, which will increase river levels and flows throughout the South Nation jurisdiction.

New Chair of the Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Committee Announced

The Raisin-South Nation Source Protection Committee has a new Chair. Local farmer and active community member, Ray Beauregard, was recently appointed by the Ontario Minister of Environment and Climate Change for this important role under Ontario’s Clean Water Act, 2006

SNC Looking for Weather Watch Volunteers

Have you ever wanted to help out in nature conservation, but were not sure how to go about it and you do not have a lot of time to spare?

Well, South Nation Conservation just might have the right job for you. It’s easy, not particularly time consuming, and it’s rewarding.

SNC has 20 free rain gauges to distribute throughout its 4,384 square-km jurisdiction extending from the Brockville area to Plantagenet and one of them could be yours to maintain and collect precipitation data.

Controlled Tile Drainage Workshop on February 28

The Ottawa Rural Clean Water Program, in partnership with South Nation Conservation, Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, and Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority invites local farmers, drainage contractors, and drainage superintendents to come and learn more about the benefits of Controlled Tile Drainage (CTD) on February 28.

The information session will be held at the Kars Recreation Association Centre located at 1604 Old Wellington Street St., Kars, ON from 12:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided to participants.

SNC’s Maple Education Program is Just Around the Corner!

South Nation Conservation (SNC), in partnership with Sand Road Maple Farm in Moose Creek, is once again offering its popular Maple Education Program, which provides a unique, hands-on history of the production of maple syrup.

SNC’s AGM Taking Place on February 17

South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) Board of Directors Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be taking place on Friday, February 17, 2017.  As with all SNC Board meetings, the public is welcome to attend the meeting.

“This year’s AGM will recognize SNC’s 70th Anniversary of watershed management and leadership in supplying sustainable services,” says John Mesman, SNC Team Lead, Communications.  “The AGM will include a special historical presentation featuring SNC’s 70 years of environmental success and organizational growth.”

Tree Planting Subsidies Available from SNC

Although it may be the middle of winter, it is not too early to start thinking about spring tree planting.

Residents of SNC’s jurisdiction can order conifer and deciduous trees, and even shrubs through SNC at a reduced rate. “Trees provide unique benefits; they increase property value, add aesthetic appeal, and provide wildlife habitat,” states SNC Forestry Technician Cheyene Brunet. “Based on our orders to date, over 100,000 trees will be added to SNC’s jurisdiction in 2017 through our Tree Planting Program.”

SNC Works with Municipal Partners to Groom 30km of Trails this Winter

South Nation Conservation (SNC) invites residents and visitors to enjoy their network of trails that remain open throughout the winter season.

In addition to SNC’s Conservation Areas (CA), SNC works with Municipal partners to keep a number of parks and trails groomed, helping increase winter recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.

“The groomed trails are suitable for a variety of winter activities including hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, on-leash dog-walking, birding, and geocaching,” mentioned Lisa Van De Ligt, SNC Communications Specialist.
