SNC Board Elects New Executive

Members appointed by South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 16-member municipalities were confirmed at the Authority’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Bill Smirle, representing Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, was elected the new Chair. George Darouze, Councillor for the City of Ottawa’s Osgoode Ward, was elected Vice-Chair and Doug Thompson was confirmed as Past Chair.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: Flood Outlook Statement

Weather Forecast:
Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting above-freezing temperatures starting Sunday, March 10th, 2019. Current short-term forecast indicates minimal amounts of precipitation.    

Environmental Conditions:
The South Nation Conservation (SNC) jurisdiction has received an above average amount of snowfall this winter. Snowpack and ice thickness across the watershed are also above average, while water levels are slightly below normal for this time of the year.

Public Invited to Open House on Natural Hazard Mapping

Extreme weather makes the news frequently. Locally, South Nation Conservation (SNC) reduces risk to life and damage to property by providing municipalities and residents with advance notice of potential flooding.

Flood forecasting responds to weather events experienced in a watershed and compares them over time. Flood forecasting and warning is also an important response to intense precipitation events.

In addition to flood forecasting, SNC is currently updating and improving floodplain and slope-stability maps for the City of Ottawa contained within SNC’s jurisdiction.

SNC Participates in Invasive Species Awareness Week

Invasive Species Awareness Week runs from February 25 to March 3 and South Nation Conservation (SNC) is participating by raising public awareness and working to control invasive species within its 12,000 acres of Community Land across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

There are over 20 invasive species in the jurisdiction, including: terrestrial shrubs such as the Dog-strangling vine and Glossy Buckthorn, aquatic plants such as the Yellow Iris, species of fish including the Round Goby, and insects such as the Emerald Ash Borer.

SNC Offers Free Woodlot Advisory Service to Local Landowners

Are you a landowner with at least 10 acres of woodlot property?

Thanks to support from the United Counties of Prescott and Russell and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, South Nation Conservation (SNC) offers its Woodlot Advisory Service (WAS) to residents who own at least 10 acres of forest.

This woodlot program includes a site visit by a trained forestry professional, a preliminary site evaluation and map, and suggestions on woodlot management; all at no-cost, a service available in English and French.

Free Ice Fishing Across SNC Jurisdiction This Weekend

Residents of Ontario can fish without a licence this Family Day Weekend, from February 16 to 18, and South Nation Conservation (SNC) is encouraging families from across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario to get fishing.

Locally, the South Nation River is a popular destination for recreational ice fishing; it is 175 kilometres long, beginning north of Brockville and empties into the Ottawa River near Plantagenet, and houses as many as 72 species of fish.

SNC’s Geocaching Passports Prove to be Popular

South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) Geopassport Series has guided thousands of users on real-life and high-tech treasure hunts across various portions of its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

Geocaching is a year-round outdoor recreational activity; the basic idea is to use a GPS device or smartphone to locate specific sets of coordinates in search of hidden boxes called geocaches, which contain prizes and logbooks.

SNC Extends Deadline for Subsidized Tree Orders by a Week

Residents from across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario can now purchase over-the-counter trees directly from the Conservation Authority at a subsidized cost until Friday, February 8, 2019.

The price per seedling can be as low as $0.58 depending on the species, and a minimum of 100 seedlings in multiples of 50 per species can be ordered while supplies last. SNC’s over-the-counter trees are locally sourced and are native stock to Ontario.
