FLOOD WARNING DOWNGRADED: Ottawa River – Arnprior to Hawkesbury

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has downgraded the Flood Warning for the Ottawa River issued on April 19, 2019 to a Water Safety Statement.

Weather Forecast:
Rainfall of 15 to 25 mm is possible late Saturday, June 1, into Sunday, June 2, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels along the lower Ottawa River from Gatineau to the Grenville/Hawkesbury area are expected to slowly begin decreasing today and more rapidly over the coming days.

FLOOD WARNING: Saint Lawrence River – Update #2

Weather Forecast:
Rainfall of 15 to 25 mm is possible late Saturday, June 1, into Sunday, June 2, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Lake Ontario’s water levels have reached the record peaks observed in 2017 and are expected to slowly continue rising. Peak levels will likely exceed those experienced in 2017 within the next several days.

Levels are already at critical values in some areas. Flooding and other high-water impacts continue to be reported around the upper Saint Lawrence River during periods of active weather.

SNC Delivers Hands-On Tree Planting Experiences to Watershed Students

This past week, South Nation Conservation (SNC) worked with local students to green up two schoolyards in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, contributing to the area’s forest cover!

On Monday, May 27, 2019, SNC teamed up with youth from Saint-Viateur Catholic Elementary School in Limoges to plant 3 Red Maple Trees as part of the school’s ongoing beautification initiative. Student’s enrolled in the school’s Club Écolo were taught how to properly plant and care for trees by SNC staff and learned about the importance of planting trees to improve local forest cover.

FLOOD WARNING: Ottawa River – Arnprior to Hawkesbury – Update #14

Weather Forecast:
There are no significant weather systems expected this week.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels along the lower Ottawa River from Gatineau to the Grenville/Hawkesbury area are expected to remain stable and should resume declining on Wednesday, May 29, 2019. No additional increase in water levels is expected.

SNC Enjoys Successful Maple Program Relaunch at the Oschmann Forest

Revitalized at a new site, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) flagship Maple Syrup Education Program relaunched for its 18th season in March, now at the Oschmann Forest in Ormond, North Dundas.

Donated to SNC in 2017 by the Oschmann Family in memory of Gertrude Oschmann, the 18-acre forest boasts a diverse woodlot that was actively managed for maple syrup production for 50 years until the early 2000’s.

FLOOD WARNING: Saint Lawrence River – Update #1

Weather Forecast: Rainfall of 10 to 25 mm is possible Saturday, May 25, 2019. A strong wind warning is in effect as current forecasts suggests winds will continue to have a noticeable impact on water levels.

Environmental Conditions: Lake Ontario’s levels have been rising at a slower rate this week due to lower amounts of precipitation, allowing for Lake Ontario outflows to be increased substantially as Ottawa River flows declined.

Weather Forecast:
Rainfall of 10 to 15 mm is possible Friday, May 24, into Saturday, May 25, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels along the lower Ottawa River from Chats Lake to the Grenville/Hawkesbury area will continue to progressively decline over the coming weeks.

Risks:
All flood-prone areas along the Ottawa River from Lac Coulonge down to the Montreal Archipelago are at risk as spring runoff continues along the upper
Ottawa River.

Weather Forecast:

Rainfall of 10 to 25 mm is possible Saturday through Monday, May 20, 2019. A strong wind warning is in effect as current forecasts suggests winds will continue to have a noticeable impact on water levels.

Environmental Conditions:

Lake Ontario’s water levels rose rapidly over the past week due to record inflows from Lake Erie, combined with increased Ottawa River flows, which resulted in Lake Ontario outflows being reduced.

SNC Opens Parks and Extends Office Hours This Week!

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has re-opened its parks, trails, docks and boat launches in time for the Victoria Day long weekend.

SNC’s network of 14 day-use Conservation Areas across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario are accessible free of charge and provide public access to the Conservation Authority’s 12,000 acres of community land. These well-maintained properties offer endless, close-to-home recreational opportunities in natural areas.
