SNC Makes a Splash at Local Elementary Schools with Stream of Dreams

Three more schools from across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) jurisdiction have colourful aquatic murals installed on schoolyard fences to inspire and remind communities to conserve and protect water resources and the local environment.

This June, SNC partnered with Russell Public School, École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Thérèse-d'Avila in Marionville, and Vimy Ridge Public School in the City of Ottawa to administer the Stream of Dreams interactive eco-education program to over 1,100 local elementary students.

SNC Accepting Applications for Community Environmental Grants Program

Are you planning an environmental or recreational event for your community this summer? South Nation Conservation (SNC) is now accepting applications for its Community Environmental Grants Program.

Non-profit groups are encouraged to apply to receive a grant of up to $300 to help offset the costs of their event or activity. The program has four grant categories: River, Heritage, Agri-Environmental and Community Outreach.

FLOOD WARNING: Saint Lawrence River – Update #5

Weather Forecast:

Rainfall of 20 to 40 mm and strong winds are possible Monday, June 24, 2019 through Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Lake Ontario’s water levels have slightly declined this past week. Although, with record inflows from Lake Erie expected to continue, water levels will remain near seasonal highs for the next several weeks.

Flooding and other high-water impacts continue to be reported around the upper Saint Lawrence River during periods of active weather.

FLOOD WARNING: Saint Lawrence River – Update #4

Weather Forecast:
Rainfall of 15 to 25 mm and strong winds are possible Saturday, June 15, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Lake Ontario’s water levels have reached the record peaks observed in 2017 as of two weeks ago and have since slightly dropped and stabilized.

Levels are already at critical values in some areas. Flooding and other high-water impacts continue to be reported around the upper Saint Lawrence River during periods of active weather.

Watch Out: Turtles Begin Nesting Season in SNC Jurisdiction

The first day of summer is finally approaching in South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario; the weather is warming, the sun is shining for longer, and turtles are on the move.

Beginning in the spring, female turtles will emerge from nearby bodies of water in search of suitable nesting sites; oftentimes they will cross busy roads in search of their preferred nesting habitat, frequently settling in gravel shoulders of roadways.

SNC to Host Annual Fundraising Golf Tournament on August 8 in Morrisburg

South Nation Conservation (SNC) will be hosting its annual fundraising Friends of SNC Golf Tournament this year on August 8 at the Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburg.

Players will enjoy an 18-hole round of golf, a powered cart, a breakfast buffet and a barbecue lunch. Participants can also expect door prizes from local businesses, on-hole games and contests, and a hole-in-one cash prize sponsored by RBC Royal Bank.

Environmental Conditions:
Lake Ontario’s water levels have reached the record peaks observed in 2017 and have since slowly risen. Due to the absence of significant weather systems, Lake Ontario appears to be stabilizing.

Levels are already at critical values in some areas. Flooding and other high-water impacts continue to be reported around the upper Saint Lawrence River during periods of active weather.

Water Safety Statement: Ottawa River – Arnprior to Hawkesbury

Weather Forecast:
Rainfall of 20 to 30 mm is possible on Monday, June 10, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels along the lower Ottawa River from Gatineau to the Grenville/Hawkesbury area will continue to decline in the coming weeks.

Risks:
Water levels and flows are still high, but no additional increase in water levels is expected.

ACTION:
Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to closely monitor conditions and take necessary actions.

Government of Canada Invests $15 Million for Tree Planting

A new four-year federal investment into Ontario’s environment will help increase province-wide forest cover and support local landowner planting initiatives.

On Tuesday, June 5, 2019, the Government of Canada announced their plans to invest up to $15 million to support Forest Ontario’s vision of planting 50 million trees by 2020, following the Ontario Government’s cancellation of funding for the program in April 2019.

SNC Hosts Students to Plant 3,000 Trees and Shrubs Along Watercourses

With support from the EcoAction Community Funding Program, South Nation Conservation (SNC) has planted over 3,000 native trees and shrubs along watercourses in partnership with local landowners, secondary schools and First Nations from across the Conservation Authority’s 4,384 square-km jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

Through this work, SNC monitored local streams and identified 4 farms in Casselman, North Dundas, Nation and the City of Ottawa that could benefit from tree buffers being planted around watercourses.
