Nearly 100 golfers and local sponsors helped South Nation Conservation (SNC) raised $4,000 for youth environmental education at its annual Friends of SNC Golf Tournament on August 8 at the Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburg.

“A big thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored or made a donation to the tournament, making it one of our most successful tournaments yet,” says John Mesman, SNC Team Lead, Communications.

For many, the summer is a time for holidays, relaxation and downtime; a time to get outdoors and explore the beauty of the local landscapes found across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

For SNC, it’s time to take advantage of the warm weather and monitor local streams and waterways to inform watershed health and future stewardship projects.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is reminding residents from its member municipalities affected by the 2019 Ottawa River flooding that they have until September 4^th to apply to the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program to receive financial assistance from the Province.

The Provincial Government has activated its disaster relief program for several areas along the Ottawa River, including four of SNC’s member municipalities: the City of Ottawa, Clarence-Rockland, Alfred and Plantagenet, and Champlain.

A partnership between South Nation Conservation (SNC) and the City of Ottawa is working to curb the spread of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer across Canada’s Capital through the Ash Tree Replacement Program.

Through the program, City of Ottawa property owners could be eligible to receive up to $500 in cost-share funding towards the removal and replacement of an infected ash tree on their property, up to a maximum of $5,000 per landowner. The City of Ottawa funding is limited to a first-come, first-serve basis.

Lake Ontario’s water levels rose slightly following this week’s severe thunderstorms. Water levels have since stabilized and will continue declining but will remain near seasonal highs for the next several weeks as record inflows from Lake Erie are expected to continue.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) works with community partners to host family-friendly environmental events along local waterways throughout the summer to showcase the local environment and provide cost-effective recreational opportunities for families and visitors.

“It’s All About the River” will take place on Saturday, July 20^th, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, along the Morrisburg Waterfront in partnership with the South Dundas Chamber of Commerce and Ontario Power Generation.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has planted over 136,000 native trees and shrubs this spring planting season across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario through forestry programs, municipal and community partnerships, tree giveaways and planting events.

“We work with our 16 member municipalities, local landowners and community partners to plant trees and shrubs to create a greener summer and future, and to increase local forest cover,” explains Cheyene Brunet, SNC Forestry Technician. “We’re extremely happy with how many trees we planted this spring.”

Three more schools from across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) jurisdiction have colourful aquatic murals installed on schoolyard fences to inspire and remind communities to conserve and protect water resources and the local environment.

This June, SNC partnered with Russell Public School, École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Thérèse-d'Avila in Marionville, and Vimy Ridge Public School in the City of Ottawa to administer the Stream of Dreams interactive eco-education program to over 1,100 local elementary students.
