SNC Accepting Applications to Community Environmental Grants Program

Are you planning an environmental project or outdoor recreational event in your community this year? South Nation Conservation (SNC) is now accepting applications for the 2020 intake of its Community Environmental Grants Program.

Non-profit and community groups may apply to receive a grant of up to $300 to help offset the costs of their local event or activity. The program’s four categories are: River; Heritage; Agri-Environmental; and Community Outreach.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

 

Weather Forecast:
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for most of the week.  

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels across the watershed are high for this time of the year. Precipitation gauges across the jurisdiction recorded 40 mm of rain over the weekend.

Risks:
Due to last weekend’s significant rainfall as well as snowmelt, the watershed is experiencing higher than normal water levels.

Rainfall amounts of 15 to 30 mm as well as a mix of ice and snow is forecast to begin Friday evening and will continue into Saturday, January 11, 2020.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels across the jurisdiction are normal for this time of the year. Soils are frozen and there is an average amount of snow cover across the jurisdiction.

Public Invited to Open Houses on Natural Hazard Mapping in Rural East Ottawa

South Nation Conservation (SNC) invites residents in the City of Ottawa’s rural east end to attend public open houses taking place on January 29th at the Kenmore Community Centre in Kenmore and on January 30th at École élémentaire catholique Saint-Guillaume in Vars to view and comment on new natural hazard maps for their areas.

Updated floodplain and erosion hazard maps were developed for the areas of South Castor River, from Victoria Street to Springhill Road, and Shaw’s Creek, from Perrault Road to Burton Road.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

Weather Forecast:
Significant rainfall of 20 to 30 mm is forecasted for December 14th.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels across the jurisdiction are normal for this time of year. Currently soils are saturated or partly frozen with minimal amounts of snow cover across the jurisdiction.  

Risks:
Rainfall is likely to produce high water levels and possible nuisance flooding in low-lying areas across the jurisdiction.

SNC Unveils Property Upgrades at J. Henry Tweed Conservation Area in Russell

Thanks to support provided by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), South Nation Conservation (SNC) has completed property upgrades and shoreline restoration work at the J. Henry Tweed Conservation Area in Russell this fall.

Work included resurfacing the park’s recreational trail; installing a new pedestrian bridge; removing hazard trees to increase public safety; and restoring sections of shoreline along the park’s watercourse to help reduce erosion. Additional tree planting is also scheduled to take place in the spring of next year to help increase local forest cover.

Local Conservation Authorities are pleased with the findings of the independent review of the Spring 2019 flood. Retained by the Ontario Government, Special Advisor on Flooding Douglas NcNeil recognizes Ontario’s unique watershed-based Conservation Authority model and its success in minimizing flood risks and mitigating flood impacts.
