SNC Works with Municipal Partners to Spruce up Roadsides

South Nation Conservation (SNC) works closely with its 16 partner municipalities to deliver environmental services that protect people and property from natural hazards, support sustainable development, and protect and enhance the local environment.

With support from the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG), 542 native trees and shrubs will be planted alongside County roadways this month throughout parts of North Dundas, North Stormont and South Glengarry.

Public Invited to Open House on Natural Hazard Mapping in Russell

South Nation Conservation (SNC) invites residents in the Township of Russell to attend a public open house on October 9th at the Russell Town Hall to view and comment on new natural hazard maps for areas in Embrun.

Updated floodplain and slope-stability maps were developed for the areas of East York Creek from Route 300 to the Castor River, and the Castor River between Saint Joseph Road and St. Albert Road.

SNC Employs Local Summer Students

With support from Federal and Provincial funding agencies, South Nation Conservation (SNC) continues to lead the way in local summer student employment. In total, 8 students and recent graduates were employed by the Conservation Authority this summer.

All Aboard the SNC Fall Bus Tour!

One of the best ways to get a close-up view of South Nation Conservation’s 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario is by coach, sitting up high and soaking in local landscapes while learning more about the work the Conservation Authority does on behalf of its member municipalities.

That’s just part of the attraction of the annual SNC Bus Tour on Tuesday, September 17th, 2019.

SNC DECLARES LEVEL I LOW WATER CONDITION

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has issued a Level I low water condition for its entire watershed in Eastern Ontario, including the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet and Nation Municipality.

Despite a cool and wet spring and recent isolated rainstorms, an overall lack of precipitation throughout the summer has led to the current low water condition. Records indicate that precipitation over the past three months was at least 20% below normal.

FLOOD WARNING DOWNGRADED: Saint Lawrence River

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has downgraded the Flood Warning for the Saint Lawrence River issued on May 17, 2019, to a Flood Watch.

Weather Forecast:
There is a risk of severe thunderstorms and strong winds on Wednesday, August 21, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Lake Ontario’s water levels are declining, which will continue into the fall. Levels are still expected to remain near seasonal highs over the next several weeks.

SNC Youth Fish Camps Educate Dozens

South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 11th Annual Youth Fish Camps have officially reeled-in for the 2019 season. In total, 65 children aged 8 to 13-years old were hosted at five camps, which took place at Cass Bridge Conservation Area in Winchester, High Falls Conservation Area in Casselman, and Jessup’s Falls Conservation Area in Plantagenet.

SNC Golf Tournament Raises $4,000 for Maple Syrup Education Program

Nearly 100 golfers and local sponsors helped South Nation Conservation (SNC) raised $4,000 for youth environmental education at its annual Friends of SNC Golf Tournament on August 8 at the Upper Canada Golf Course in Morrisburg.

“A big thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored or made a donation to the tournament, making it one of our most successful tournaments yet,” says John Mesman, SNC Team Lead, Communications.

FLOOD WARNING: Saint Lawrence River – Update #8

Weather Forecast: 

There is a potential of severe thunderstorms and strong winds on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 and Wednesday, August 7, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:

Lake Ontario’s water levels continue to decline but will remain near seasonal highs for the next several weeks as record inflows from Lake Erie are expected to continue.

Flooding and other high-water impacts continue to be reported around the upper Saint Lawrence River during periods of active weather.

For many, the summer is a time for holidays, relaxation and downtime; a time to get outdoors and explore the beauty of the local landscapes found across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

For SNC, it’s time to take advantage of the warm weather and monitor local streams and waterways to inform watershed health and future stewardship projects.
