WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

Weather Forecast:
Significant rainfall of 20 to 30 mm is forecasted for December 14th.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels across the jurisdiction are normal for this time of year. Currently soils are saturated or partly frozen with minimal amounts of snow cover across the jurisdiction.  

Risks:
Rainfall is likely to produce high water levels and possible nuisance flooding in low-lying areas across the jurisdiction.

SNC Unveils Property Upgrades at J. Henry Tweed Conservation Area in Russell

Thanks to support provided by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), South Nation Conservation (SNC) has completed property upgrades and shoreline restoration work at the J. Henry Tweed Conservation Area in Russell this fall.

Work included resurfacing the park’s recreational trail; installing a new pedestrian bridge; removing hazard trees to increase public safety; and restoring sections of shoreline along the park’s watercourse to help reduce erosion. Additional tree planting is also scheduled to take place in the spring of next year to help increase local forest cover.

Local Conservation Authorities Support Recommendations in Ontario’s Independent Review of 2019 Flood Events

Local Conservation Authorities are pleased with the findings of the independent review of the Spring 2019 flood. Retained by the Ontario Government, Special Advisor on Flooding Douglas NcNeil recognizes Ontario’s unique watershed-based Conservation Authority model and its success in minimizing flood risks and mitigating flood impacts.

Your Land Your Legacy: SNC Accepting Land Donations

Do you own idle land, and are passionate about protecting the local environment? Have you ever thought about what kind of legacy you want to leave for future generations?

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is inviting residents from across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario to consider donations of land as their natural heritage legacy.

As a member of the Ontario Land Trust Alliance, SNC is also approved to accept donations of land through Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program, which can provide significant financial benefits to donors.

Step into Nature and Enjoy SNC’s Pet-Friendly Community Trails

South Nation Conservation (SNC) owns and maintains over 30 kilometers of dog-friendly recreational trails across its network of fourteen Conservation Areas in Eastern Ontario; with over 70,000 visitors recorded thus far in 2019.

SNC’s trails provide residents with a solitary bliss away from the routine of their busy lives by connecting people and their pets to nature. The trails also support a range of cost-effective recreational outdoor activities including walking, running, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and geocaching.

SNC Ends Low Water Conditions

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has terminated Level I Low Water Conditions issued on August 29th, 2019 across its entire watershed in Eastern Ontario.

Overall precipitation this summer was at least 20% below normal causing minor drought conditions across the SNC watershed. However consistent amounts of rain throughout October has helped to alleviate the Low Water Conditions and restore stream flows back to normal levels.

Significant rainfall of 30 to 50 mm is forecasted for October 30th until November 1st, 2019.

Environmental Conditions:
Water levels across the jurisdiction are normal for this time of year but are expected to increase within the coming days.

Some SNC Conservation Areas to Remain Open for Winter

South Nation Conservation (SNC) will be winding down park operations, removing docks from its waterfront properties, and closing trails at some of its14 day-use Conservation Areas for winter maintenance in the upcoming weeks.

While the dog days of summer are behind us, residents can still get outdoors to take advantage of SNC’s Conservation Areas that will remain open and maintained for winter use: W.E Burton and J. Henry Tweed in Russell, Two Creeks Forest in Morrisburg, Robert Graham in Glen Stewart, and Warwick Forest in Berwick.
