FLOOD WATCH: Ottawa River – Arnprior to L’Orignal – Update #1

Weather Forecast: Forecasts indicate that two low pressure systems will be combining to produce significant rainfall of 50 to 65 mm and warmer temperatures over much of the Ottawa River basin beginning on Thursday, April 18 through to Saturday, April 20, 2019.

Environmental Conditions: The current snowpack throughout much of the Ottawa River basin remains at twice its normal depth for this time of the year and soils are saturated.

SNC Giving Free Trees to Residents Across Jurisdiction

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is partnering with its 16 member municipalities to give free trees to residents from across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

Each of SNC’s member municipalities will be hosting tree giveaway events in their communities within the coming weeks to distribute free trees provided by SNC to
local residents to help reinforce a local commitment to improving forest cover.

Weather Forecast:
Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting above freezing temperatures for the rest of the week. Rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 mm are possible Thursday to Saturday.

Environmental Conditions:
Since issuing the last statement on April 8, the South Nation Conservation (SNC) rain gauges have recorded 20 to 30 mm of rain. Soil across the jurisdiction is saturated, and there is minimal snowpack remaining.

SNC and Geocachers Partner to Host Community Clean-up in Greely

With the last bit of snow cover melting away, a winter’s worth of garbage accumulation is starting to reveal itself.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) and the Geocachers of Eastern Ontario are inviting residents to participate in the 10th annual Cache-In, Trash-Out (SNCITO) spring community clean-up and Geocaching event in Greely on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

This year’s SNCITO clean-up will focus on pre-selected sites at nearby parks, trails and other public spaces in the Greely community; including Andy Shields Park.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: Flood Outlook Statement – Update #3

This statement is an update to the Flood Outlook statement issued on March 26, 2019.

Weather Forecast:
Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a freeze-thaw cycle and high temperatures of 2 to 10 °C until April 12, 2019. Total rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 mm are also expected today and tomorrow. There is potential for additional significant rainfall at the end of this week.

SNC Publishes 2018 Annual Report

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has published its 2018 Annual Report, available online and at the Conservation Authority’s head office in Finch.

Released annually in English and French, this summary document showcases SNC’s programs, services and accomplishments from the preceding year.

The Annual Report also provides local residents and partners from across SNC’s 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario with updates on: community projects, tree planting statistics, SNC’s 14 day-use Conservation Areas, and forestry and
stewardship initiatives.

SNC Relaunches Popular Maple Syrup Program at New Community Forest

One of the sweetest educational opportunities you’ll ever experience has settled into its new home: South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) flagship Maple Syrup Education Program has relaunched for its 18th season, now at the Oschmann Forest in Ormond, North Dundas.

Donated to SNC in 2017 by the Oschmann Family in memory of Gertrude Oschmann, the 18-acre forest boasts a diverse woodlot that was actively managed for maple syrup production for 50 years until the early 2000’s.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting a freeze-thaw cycle starting on March 27. High temperatures of 5 to 10 °C are expected for the rest of this week, with possible rainfall amounts of 25 to 30 mm Friday and Saturday.
