Students Take Part in Shield’s Creek Restoration

Thirty students from Ottawa’s Hillcrest High School were hosted by South Nation Conservation (SNC) in October to work on erosion control projects along Shield’s Creek in Greely.

Through this work, the students were able to complete Specialist High Skills Major certifications towards their high school diplomas. Students helped with erosion control work, planting trees, participated in electrofishing, studied benthic invertebrates, and did water quality testing with Ottawa’s Water Rangers.

SNC Ends Drought Advisory

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has lifted the 5-month Drought Advisory triggered by a dry spring and summer.

Since July, SNC’s Water Response Team composed of representatives from municipal and provincial government, the agricultural community, and other special interest groups frequently met to discuss the drought conditions and the noted impacts to the community.

SNC Makes a Splash at Local Elementary Schools

South Nation Conservation (SNC) delivered the eco-education program called Stream of Dreams to nearly 1,000 local elementary students this year.

SNC partnered with Mother Theresa Catholic School in Russell, Roxmore Public School in Avonmore, and Centennial ’67 Public School in Spencerville to teach children about the importance of protecting their local watershed, rivers, and streams.

SNC Leads Way in Low Impact Approaches to Development

Over 120 regional municipal staff, engineers and Conservation professionals attended a first of its kind Eastern Ontario Training Conference in Ottawa from November 7 to 9 to learn more about the sustainable green infrastructure practice known as Low Impact Development (LID).

LID is a stormwater management strategy that mitigates the impacts of increased runoff in urban areas and stormwater pollution by managing runoff as close to its source as possible.

Drought conditions continue in part of SNC jurisdiction

Thanks to a wet Fall, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) Water Response Team has downgraded the low water conditions in the jurisdiction.

In September, the Team issued a moderate (Level 2) drought condition for the Upper South Nation River Region, an area that extends from the South Nation River headwaters in the Augusta Township to the Village of Casselman.  The remainder of the jurisdiction was in a minor (Level 1) drought.

SNC Accepting Applications for Community Environmental Grants Program

Are you planning an environmental or recreational event for your community in 2019? South Nation Conservation (SNC) is now accepting applications for their Community Environmental Grants Program!

Non-profit groups are encouraged to apply to receive a grant of up to $300 to help offset the costs of their event or activity. The program has four grant categories: River, Heritage, Agri-Environmental and Community Outreach.

Take a Hike Year-Round on SNC Lands!

While the dog days of summer are behind us, there are still great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors this fall and winter!

South Nation Conservation (SNC) owns and manages over 12,000 acres of public natural space, including a network of 14 day-use Conservation Areas accessible free of charge.

“Although some of the day-use parks are being closed for winter, we offer 30 km of groomed trails for your winter enjoyment,” said Philip Duncan, SNC Property and Approvals Assistant.
