SNC Leads Way in Low Impact Approaches to Development

Over 120 regional municipal staff, engineers and Conservation professionals attended a first of its kind Eastern Ontario Training Conference in Ottawa from November 7 to 9 to learn more about the sustainable green infrastructure practice known as Low Impact Development (LID).

LID is a stormwater management strategy that mitigates the impacts of increased runoff in urban areas and stormwater pollution by managing runoff as close to its source as possible.

Drought conditions continue in part of SNC jurisdiction

Thanks to a wet Fall, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) Water Response Team has downgraded the low water conditions in the jurisdiction.

In September, the Team issued a moderate (Level 2) drought condition for the Upper South Nation River Region, an area that extends from the South Nation River headwaters in the Augusta Township to the Village of Casselman.  The remainder of the jurisdiction was in a minor (Level 1) drought.

SNC Accepting Applications for Community Environmental Grants Program

Are you planning an environmental or recreational event for your community in 2019? South Nation Conservation (SNC) is now accepting applications for their Community Environmental Grants Program!

Non-profit groups are encouraged to apply to receive a grant of up to $300 to help offset the costs of their event or activity. The program has four grant categories: River, Heritage, Agri-Environmental and Community Outreach.

Take a Hike Year-Round on SNC Lands!

While the dog days of summer are behind us, there are still great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors this fall and winter!

South Nation Conservation (SNC) owns and manages over 12,000 acres of public natural space, including a network of 14 day-use Conservation Areas accessible free of charge.

“Although some of the day-use parks are being closed for winter, we offer 30 km of groomed trails for your winter enjoyment,” said Philip Duncan, SNC Property and Approvals Assistant.

SNC Hosts TD Tree Days Planting Event in New Community Forest

With support from TD Tree Days, South Nation Conservation (SNC) planted 150 potted stock trees and shrubs at the Oschmann Forest in the Township of North Dundas on October 14 with the help of over 50 local volunteers.

Undeterred by the morning’s cool weather, volunteers of all ages planted native trees and shrubs amidst a warm backdrop of fall colours.

SNC Accepting Tree Orders for Spring 2019

There are many ways for residents to take advantage of subsidies to help plant trees and South Nation Conservation (SNC) is encouraging interested residents to contact their office early to help plan their planting project. SNC has also added new funds to help property owners plant more trees alongside watercourses and farm fields. This is one of the new initiatives that the Conservation Authority is taking towards addressing the loss of regional forest cover.

SNC and Delta Waterfowl Partner for Annual First Hunt Program

For the eleventh year in a row, South Nation Conservation (SNC) has partnered with Delta Waterfowl to sponsor and administer its popular First Hunt Program, giving local kids between the ages of 12 and 15 the opportunity to safely develop sustainable hunting skills while under the direct supervision of qualified mentors.

SNC Publishes Report on Protecting, Increasing Forest Cover

A new report: “Protecting and Increasing Forest Cover in the South Nation Conservation Jurisdiction” was recently published by South Nation Conservation (SNC) and shared with its 16 member municipalities in Eastern Ontario. The report is a culmination of two years of consultation and review with local stakeholder working groups.

Drought Conditions Worsen in Part of SNC Jurisdiction

The South Nation Conservation (SNC) Water Response Team has upgraded the drought advisory from minor to moderate (Level 2) for the Upper South Nation River Region.  This area extends from the South Nation River headwaters in the Augusta Township to the Village of Casselman (see map).  The remainder of the jurisdiction will remain in a minor (Level 1) drought condition as originally issued on July 1, 2018.

SNC Employs Local Summer Students

With support from Federal and Provincial funding agencies, South Nation Conservation (SNC) continues to lead the way in local summer student employment. In total, 8 students were employed by the Conservation Authority this summer.
