Drop a line at SNC’s 10th Annual Youth Fish Camp

Due to popular demand, South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 10th annual Youth Fish Camp will host 3 camps this year: High Falls Conservation Area in Casselman, Cass Bridge Conservation Area in Winchester and Jessup’s Falls Conservation Area in Plantagenet.

“Our fish camp teaches youth the rules of fishing, where to drop a line, selecting equipment, baiting – including fly-tying, and casting. Each of the camp sites offer accessible docks, so youth of all abilities are welcome to join,” said SNC Communications student Samantha DeVries.

The Unveiling of the Alvin Runnalls Forest

South Nation Conservation (SNC) and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) unveiled the new Alvin Runnalls Forest, which include parcels of land owned by SDG and SNC, on Sunday, June 10, 2018.

North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan and Deputy Mayor Gerry Boyce were on site with SNC and SDG officials who welcomed the Runnalls family and approximately 70 neighbors and friends who attended the event.

One Tree at a Time – 127,250 Trees Planted by SNC in May

Every spring, South Nation Conservation (SNC) works with municipalities and property owners to plant trees and shrubs; creating a greener summer and future. 127,250 tree seedlings have now been put into the ground in 2018 through SNC’s forestry programs, community tree giveaways and tree planting events

“Trees provide many unique benefits; they add aesthetic appeal, provide shade and can even increase property value,” said Cheyene Brunet, SNC’s Forestry Technician. “Plus, planting trees is a great way to enhance local forest cover and help reduce erosion”

Weather Forecast

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada precipitation is forecasted across the Ottawa River watershed for Thursday through the weekend.

Environmental Conditions:

According to the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board, the lower river reach water levels and flows are expected to peak sometime mid-week.  

Risks:

Continued spring runoff due to high temperatures and the forecasted precipitation are likely to increase water levels and cause nuisance flooding in low-lying areas.

SNC Attains Three Millionth Tree Milestone

South Nation Conservation has reached a major milestone, planting its three millionth tree since 1990 when it introduced a partnership program with private landowners and public organizations.

The milestone was celebrated May 5 at Camp Sheldrick, Township of North Dundas, with planting of a 1500-tree windbreak backed by more than 200 regional Scouts. A white pine was planted as the official three millionth three.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada warm temperatures are expected over the coming weeks in the Ottawa River basin. 

Environmental Conditions:

According to the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board, spring runoff in the northern and central portions of the Ottawa River basin is expected to continue to increase due to forecasted warm temperatures and recent precipitation.

Spring Clean-up Events: South Nation Cache-In-Trash-Out

With the last little bit of snow gone, a winter’s worth of garbage accumulation is now revealed, just in time for the 9th Annual Cache-In-Trash-Out (SNCITO) event hosted by South Nation Conservation (SNC) and the Geocachers of Eastern Ontario.

This year’s rain or shine event will be held on Saturday, April 28th beginning at 9:00 am. Participants are asked to meet at the Clarence Creek Arena to register and are reminded to dress according to the weather with good working clothes, footwear and gloves. Garbage bags and other supplies will be provided.

Spring Improvements Underway at SNC’s J. Henry Tweed Conservation Area

J. Henry Tweed Conservation Area, on Forced Road in Russell, is the perfect spot to reconnect with nature!

Filled with mature maples and elms, this 16-acre urban green space provides excellent habitat for wildlife and is open year-round for activities from hiking and snowshoeing to geocaching. The park also links Russell’s New York Central Fitness Trail, a converted railway perfect for cycling and rollerblading.

This statement is an update to the Water Safety Statement issued on April 11, 2018.

Weather Forecast: A significant weather system carrying a mix of snow, rain, and freezing rain is forecasted to cross Ontario. More than 25 mm of rainfall is expected over this weekend and into next week.

Environmental Conditions: Water levels across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) jurisdiction are rising due to the recent rainfall. Local rain gauges have recorded 5-12 mm of rainfall since Wednesday, April 11, 2018.
