WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is downgrading the Flood Watch Statement, which expired November 7, 2017 to a Water Safety Statement for the SNC jurisdiction.

Rain gauges within the region have recorded between 5 and 20 mm since November 3. Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts below-freezing temperatures and periods of rain between 1 to 5 mm in the upcoming week.

With the forecasted weather conditions; severe flooding is not a concern at this time; however, nuisance flooding in low-lying areas may still be observed.

SNC Completes Fen Rehabilitation Project Thanks to $16,000 Patagonia Investment

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is working to reduce the trend of declining wetlands in Eastern Ontario through projects that promote habitat restoration and improve biodiversity.

“Wetlands play a key role in the health of our local ecosystems,” said Katherine Watson, SNC’s Water Resources Specialist. “They filter pollutants before they enter streams, provide important habitat for rare animals and plants, and act as natural flood control.”

WATERSHED CONDITIONS – FLOOD WATCH - UPDATE

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding the forecasted weather and the potential of flooding throughout the South Nation Conservation jurisdiction.

Rain gauges within the region have recorded between 15 and 40 mm since November 1st, 2017. Environment Canada is forecasting an additional 50 to 60 mm of rainfall this weekend, with showers ending on Monday morning.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS – FLOOD WATCH

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding the forecasted weather and the potential of flooding throughout the South Nation Conservation jurisdiction.

Rain gauges within the region have recorded between 50 and 100 mm since October 29, 2017.  Environment Canada is forecasting an additional 20 mm of rainfall for today and an additional 10 to 15 mm is forecast for the remainder of the week.

Take a Hike Year-Round on SNC Lands!

While the dog days of summer are behind us, there are still many great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors this fall and winter!

South Nation Conservation (SNC) owns and manages over 12,000 acres of public natural space across a 4,384 square-km jurisdiction, including a network of 14 day-use Conservation Areas accessible free of charge.  

Within the upcoming weeks, staff will be closing some of SNC’s Conservation Areas for winter, including the removal of docks along SNC’s waterfront properties.

SNC Hosts Nearly 100 Participants at Inaugural St. Lawrence River Student Summit

South Nation Conservation (SNC) was pleased to partner with Ontario’s Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change to host the 2017 St. Lawrence River Student Summit on October 16-18, 2017.

Nearly 100 Grade 11 and 12 high school students enrolled in a Specialist High Skills Major program at three participating school boards (Upper Canada, Ottawa-Carleton and Limestone) were brought together for three exciting days of discovery, innovation and collaboration.

Youth Hunter Apprenticeship Program Fully-Subscribed for 10th Season

For the tenth year in a row, a partnership between South Nation Conservation (SNC) and Delta Waterfowl has resulted in a fully-subscribed First Hunt Program!

The program is all about introducing young people to Delta Waterfowl’s First Hunt Program, which includes the Ontario Hunter Safety course and the Canadian Firearms Certification. For 10 years running, youth between the ages of 12-15, keen to learn about hunting regulations have taken part in this free program.

SNC Plans River and Wetland Habitat Restoration in Clarence-Rockland

A new three-year partnership with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) will allow South Nation Conservation (SNC) to restore and enhance river and wetland habitat in Larose Forest.

A funding announcement on Wednesday, September 27, brought representatives from OPG, UCPR and the City of Clarence-Rockland together to visit the project site and learn more about SNC’s planned restoration work.

Wasps Turned Loose Against Emerald Ash Borer

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is helping do battle against the destructive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) by basically fighting fire with fire by unleashing one insect against another.

In this case, two-types of parasitic wasps, harmless to humans, will attack the borer before it emerges.

It’s the latest EAB management project that SNC has been involved in. Led by the Canadian Forest Service with funding support from Natural Resources Canada.

SNC Works with Municipal Partners to Spruce up Roadsides

South Nation Conservation (SNC) works closely with partners and member Municipalities to plant trees on Municipal lands every year.

With support from the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG), 480 native trees and shrubs will be planted alongside County roadways this fall, in parts of North Stormont, South Dundas and North Dundas.
