Improving Forest Cover Through Land Acquisition

South Nation Conservation (SNC) works closely with property owners, municipalities and partner organizations to acquire land of environmental, social, geographical or economic value for conservation.  

As a non-profit land trust, SNC acquires property to protect through purchase or donation. As a registered charitable organization, SNC is also able to receive ecological gifts through Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program, which offers significant tax benefits to property owners who donate their land.

SNC Completes Stream Restoration Projects Within the City of Ottawa

Two streams have been restored by South Nation Conservation (SNC) in an effort to improve water quality, biodiversity and fish habitat with the help of local residents and partner organizations.

Improvements took place on a dairy farm along the South Castor River near Vernon and at Shield’s Creek in Greely.

Support was provided through the City of Ottawa’s Water Environment Strategy, a program designed to protect the health of city waterways, wetlands and groundwater.

Year-Long SNC 70th Anniversary Celebrations Wind Down in December

Just like an afternoon at the movie theatre, the popcorn and penny candy were flowing November 5 as South Nation Conservation (SNC) presented its first-ever Film Festival to help celebrate the organization’s 70th Anniversary.

A near-capacity crowd sat back and enjoyed a two-hour show opening with video shorts, followed by the unveiling of SNC’s promotional video, and topped off with the feature: “Call of the Forests: The Forgotten Wisdom of the Trees”, by Jeff McKay.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is downgrading the Flood Watch Statement, which expired November 7, 2017 to a Water Safety Statement for the SNC jurisdiction.

Rain gauges within the region have recorded between 5 and 20 mm since November 3. Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts below-freezing temperatures and periods of rain between 1 to 5 mm in the upcoming week.

With the forecasted weather conditions; severe flooding is not a concern at this time; however, nuisance flooding in low-lying areas may still be observed.

SNC Completes Fen Rehabilitation Project Thanks to $16,000 Patagonia Investment

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is working to reduce the trend of declining wetlands in Eastern Ontario through projects that promote habitat restoration and improve biodiversity.

“Wetlands play a key role in the health of our local ecosystems,” said Katherine Watson, SNC’s Water Resources Specialist. “They filter pollutants before they enter streams, provide important habitat for rare animals and plants, and act as natural flood control.”

WATERSHED CONDITIONS – FLOOD WATCH - UPDATE

Time: 2:00 pm

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding the forecasted weather and the potential of flooding throughout the South Nation Conservation jurisdiction.

Rain gauges within the region have recorded between 15 and 40 mm since November 1st, 2017. Environment Canada is forecasting an additional 50 to 60 mm of rainfall this weekend, with showers ending on Monday morning.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS – FLOOD WATCH

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding the forecasted weather and the potential of flooding throughout the South Nation Conservation jurisdiction.

Rain gauges within the region have recorded between 50 and 100 mm since October 29, 2017.  Environment Canada is forecasting an additional 20 mm of rainfall for today and an additional 10 to 15 mm is forecast for the remainder of the week.

Take a Hike Year-Round on SNC Lands!

While the dog days of summer are behind us, there are still many great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors this fall and winter!

South Nation Conservation (SNC) owns and manages over 12,000 acres of public natural space across a 4,384 square-km jurisdiction, including a network of 14 day-use Conservation Areas accessible free of charge.  

Within the upcoming weeks, staff will be closing some of SNC’s Conservation Areas for winter, including the removal of docks along SNC’s waterfront properties.

SNC Hosts Nearly 100 Participants at Inaugural St. Lawrence River Student Summit

South Nation Conservation (SNC) was pleased to partner with Ontario’s Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change to host the 2017 St. Lawrence River Student Summit on October 16-18, 2017.

Nearly 100 Grade 11 and 12 high school students enrolled in a Specialist High Skills Major program at three participating school boards (Upper Canada, Ottawa-Carleton and Limestone) were brought together for three exciting days of discovery, innovation and collaboration.
