SNC Giving Free Trees to Residents Across Jurisdiction

18-Apr-2019 18-Apr-2019

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is partnering with its 16 member municipalities to give free trees to residents from across its 4,384 square-kilometer jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

Each of SNC’s member municipalities will be hosting tree giveaway events in their communities within the coming weeks to distribute free trees provided by SNC to
local residents to help reinforce a local commitment to improving forest cover.

A variety of seedling and potted stock species are available while supplies last, including: White Pine, White Spruce, Balsam Fir, Maple, Cedar, Red Oak and Dogwood.

“Trees provide many unique benefits; they add aesthetic appeal, provide shade and help property value,” said John Mesman, SNC’s Communications Lead. “Plus, planting trees is a great way to protect and enhance local forest cover and reduce erosion along watercourses.”

In 2018, SNC published a report on “Protecting and Increasing Forest Cover in the South Nation Conservation Jurisdiction” following two years of review and consultation with local stakeholder working groups.

Recommendations from the report include partnering with municipalities to sponsor tree giveaways and increasing subsidies for planting sites along farm fields and watercourses; SNC received over 147,500 subsidized tree orders for this year’s spring planting season, bringing the total amount of trees planted by SNC to 3.2 million since 1990.

“We will continue to work with our 16 member municipalities to protect and restore the local environment and protect people and property from natural hazards through hands-on initiatives like tree planting.”

Please visit the SNC events calendar at www.nation.on.ca/events for a complete list of upcoming tree giveaways in your community.
