WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

This statement is an update to the Water Safety Statement issued on February 16, 2018.
Weather Forecast:
SNC’s rain gauges have recorded 20-30 mm of rainfall over the past 48 hours. No further rain is expected. Environment Canada is forecasting above zero temperatures during the day and just below zero at night for the next few days.
Environmental Conditions:
Water levels across the jurisdiction are higher than normal due to the excessive rain, snowmelt due to unseasonably high temperatures, and high soil moisture conditions. Ice break-up and rapidly changing river conditions can be expected to continue to occur through the week.
Risks:
Streams within SNC’s jurisdiction are experiencing higher than normal flows and water levels. Flooding in low-lying areas may occur. The combination of slippery banks and breakable ice could create hazardous conditions close to any streams.
ACTION:
Residents are advised to exercise caution when near rivers where warmer temperatures and precipitation have resulted in increased river flows, slippery banks, and unsafe ice conditions. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.
Duration:
This statement is in effect until Friday, February 23, 2018.
