Monitoring Watershed Conditions a Year-Round Priority

Protecting people and property in the watershed from the effects of flooding, landslides and drought is top of mind for South Nation Conservation (SNC) when it monitors water quality and quantity throughout its jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario. 

Environmental monitoring and reporting support on-the-ground restoration projects and landowner stewardship, conservation lands management and education, development review and flood forecasting and warning programs.

Step into Nature at a Conservation Area this Winter

As the seasonal torch is passed from autumn to winter, the impending snowy weather is an opportunity to explore select Conservation Areas across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 4,441 km2 watershed jurisdiction that remain open for year-round enjoyment.

Traditionally SNC would close seasonal parks following the Thanksgiving weekend but opted to extend access into November to accommodate the continued increased use and great weather.

South Nation Wood Creations Online Auction Wraps Up with Solid Finish

South Nation Conservation (SNC) wrapped up an online Wood Auction that raised nearly $3,000 to support tree planting initiatives across its 4,441 km2 jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario.

“Thanks to the support from the online auction, we are well on our way to surpassing last year’s record-breaking tree planting number of 230,000 trees planted,” said John Mesman, SNC’s Community Lands and Outreach Lead.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

Weather Forecast:

Rainfall amounts are forecasted to reach up to 60 mm by early Sunday morning.

Environmental Conditions:

The South Nation River Watershed is currently in a Level 1 Low Water Condition; however, river flows are expected to increase quickly due to expected rainfall.

Risks:

Rainfall is likely to produce higher water levels and possible nuisance flooding in low-lying areas across the jurisdiction.

South Nation Conservation Updating Natural Hazard Maps Along the Ottawa River in Prescott-Russell and the Bear Brook in the City of Ottawa

As part of its mandate to protect people and property from flooding and other natural hazards, South Nation Conservation (SNC) is updating hazard mapping for its jurisdiction along the Ottawa River and the Bear Brook catchment area within the City of Ottawa.

Natural hazard maps are used by municipalities and SNC when updating official plans and zoning schedules, and in reviewing development applications to protect people and property from flooding, landslides, and erosion, and to guide safe and sustainable development.

Online Wood Creations Auction to Support SNC’s Tree Planting Programs

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is once again hosting an online fundraising auction this fall to support spring tree planting initiatives across its 4,441 km2 jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario. 

Building on the success of last year’s “Art for Trees” auction which raised $6,500 for the Authority's 2021 planting season, “South Nation Wood Creations” will feature dozens of wood ware products such as furniture, displays, art, signs, and charcuterie boards, hand-crafted by talented artisans from across the region.
