SNC Recognizes Importance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2023, marks the third National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, an important day for our Indigenous partners, locally and across the country. It also serves as a day of reflection, so that people can recognize the harmful legacy of the residential school system in Canada and collectively make the journey towards healing.

SNC Hosts TD Tree Days Community Planting Event in North Dundas

Thanks to the support of TD Tree Days, dozens of volunteers gathered on Sunday, September 17th to help South Nation Conservation (SNC) plant 280 trees at the Oak Valley Pioneer Park, in the Township of North Dundas.

The South Nation River at Oak Valley experiences significant erosion and bank slumping due to past river straightening activities, increased water velocities, and loss of tree cover. As a result, the riverbank between Cass Bridge and Oak Valley needs remediation to reduce erosion and sedimentation and to improve water quality and biodiversity.

SNC Offers Hunting Opportunities on Select SNC Lands this Fall

As summer fades and cooler temperatures move into Eastern Ontario, many of South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) watershed residents anticipate the start of the hunting season this Fall. Select SNC properties are accessible to the public for hunting and trapping opportunities, with permission from the Conservation Authority.

SNC owns and manages over 13,000 acres of community forests, wetlands, and grasslands across its 4,480 square-kilometre watershed jurisdiction; offering almost 9,000 acres of land used as hunting areas each year.

South Nation Conservation Welcomed Summer Students to Support Conservation Efforts and Stewardship Initiatives

South Nation Conservation (SNC) welcomed nine students and recent graduates to its team this summer, thanks to funding from the Federal and Provincial Governments. 

“We’re proud give students hands on opportunities to work in their fields of study,” says SNC’s Managing Director, Property, Conservation Lands and Community Outreach, John Mesman. "Our talented local youth bring hard work and enthusiasm each summer and we’re grateful for the support that they bring to the Conservation Authority.”

SNC Golf Tournament Raises Funds to Support Forest Conservation Initiatives

Nearly 80 golfers and local sponsors helped South Nation Conservation (SNC) raise over $4,000 at its annual Friends of SNC Golf Tournament on August 11th at the Casselview Golf and Country Club in Casselman.

Proceeds will support the Authority’s popular Free Tree Pick Up program next spring which helps hand out 10,000 free trees to residents in SNC’s 16 member municipalities.

SNC Launches a Derecho Storm Recovery Program for Private Landowners

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is introducing an Eastern Ontario Derecho Storm Reforestation Program, a storm recovery program for private landowners who were directly affected by the destructive storm last year.

On May 21, 2022, a narrow line of intense winds up to 195 km/hr, caused extensive damage to forested areas in Eastern Ontario from the City of Ottawa eastward through the municipalities of Clarence-Rockland, Alfred-Plantagenet, Champlain, and East Hawkesbury.

Over 300 landowners contacted SNC for assistance in the aftermath of the derecho storm.

SNC Celebrates its 75th Year in Conservation

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has been a leader of natural resource management in Eastern Ontario since 1947 and celebrated a belated 75th Anniversary event at its headquarters in Finch, Ontario on Thursday, June 15th, 2023, which welcomed over 150 guests from throughout the watershed.

The outdoor occasion celebrated seven and a half decades of environmental stewardship, conservation efforts, and community engagement.
