Established under the Conservation Authorities Act of Ontario in 1947, SNC has decades of practical experience protecting our environment and engaging communities working on behalf of 16 member municipalities in Eastern Ontario.

SNC, Ducks Unlimited Canada Celebrate World Wetlands Day with Commitment to Restoration

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every February 2nd to encourage global policy objectives around wetlands and to raise awareness about the value wetlands contribute to our lives. 

Wetlands, which can be referred to as swamps, bogs, fens or marshes, are an important interface between land and water. They contribute to our quality of life and survival by playing several important roles in the environment:

SNC Encourages Taking a Mental Break Outdoors on Bell Let’s Talk Day

This year on Bell Let’s Talk Day, South Nation Conservation (SNC) is joining the conversation around mental health and promoting the benefits of being outdoors. 

The 2022 Bell Let's Talk Day takes place on January 26th with a continued focus for increased awareness around mental health and mental illness, while encouraging Canadians and people worldwide to keep listening, keep talking and keep being there for ourselves and each other.

Year in Review: SNC Continues to Deliver Critical Environmental Services

South Nation Conservation (SNC) continued to adapt to a changing climate while delivering reliable and valuable conservation work for municipalities and watershed residents; a core competency for which the environmental agency has been known for the past 75 years. 

SNC works with 16 member municipalities across a 4,441 square-kilometer watershed jurisdiction that surrounds the South Nation River in Eastern Ontario.

SNC Partners with Ducks Unlimited Canada to Restore Wetlands Across Eastern Ontario

The revitalization of lost and degraded wetlands in Eastern Ontario will be the focus of a three-year, $375,000 restoration project, thanks to a partnership between South Nation Conservation (SNC) and Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC). 

Earlier this year, DUC successfully submitted a proposal under Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund (NSCSF) to complete numerous wetland restoration projects between 2021 and 2024.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

Weather Forecast:

Environment Canada is forecasting rainfall amounts up to 40 mm by late Saturday night. 

Environmental Conditions:

Flows in the South Nation River Watershed are high for this time of year. Water flows are expected to further increase in the coming days due to expected precipitation and melting snow. 

Risks:

Rainfall is likely to produce higher water levels and possible nuisance flooding in low-lying areas across the jurisdiction.

South Nation Conservation to Deliver Grassland Stewardship Initiative to Support Declining Bird Populations

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is delivering a new program on behalf of Grasslands Ontario, in partnership with ALUS Ontario East; an innovative community-developed and farmer-delivered program that produces, enhances, and maintains ecosystem services on agricultural lands operating within the Raisin Region and South Nation Conservation Authorities’ watersheds in Eastern Ontario.

Monitoring Watershed Conditions a Year-Round Priority

Protecting people and property in the watershed from the effects of flooding, landslides and drought is top of mind for South Nation Conservation (SNC) when it monitors water quality and quantity throughout its jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario. 

Environmental monitoring and reporting support on-the-ground restoration projects and landowner stewardship, conservation lands management and education, development review and flood forecasting and warning programs.

Step into Nature at a Conservation Area this Winter

As the seasonal torch is passed from autumn to winter, the impending snowy weather is an opportunity to explore select Conservation Areas across South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) 4,441 km2 watershed jurisdiction that remain open for year-round enjoyment.

Traditionally SNC would close seasonal parks following the Thanksgiving weekend but opted to extend access into November to accommodate the continued increased use and great weather.
