Weather Forecast: The remnants of Hurricane Beryl are expected to reach Ontario on Wednesday, bringing significant precipitation. Environment Canada forecasts 40 to 80 mm of localized rainfall,
with the heaviest rain expected to remain south of the region where rainfall warnings have been issued – though notes that the confidence in the track of the weather system is low.

A Sign of Summer: Seasonal Conservation Areas Opening for the May Long Weekend

With summer fast approaching, South Nation Conservation (SNC) is reopening its seasonal Conservation Areas, marking the changing season and welcoming the return of lush, green landscapes.

All parks and boat ramps are now accessible to
the public!

In preparation for the reopening of seasonal Conservation Areas ahead of the May
Long Weekend, docks are being installed and gates will be unlocked at the following
boat launches:

SNC Reminds Residents to Be Aware of Ticks this Summer

As warmer temperatures settle in, so do the prevalence of ticks in the region. 

South Nation Conservation (SNC) would like to remind residents and visitors to be vigilant when outdoors and take precautions against tick bites to reduce the risk of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses while enjoying nature.

FLOOD OUTLOOK - LOWER OTTAWA RIVER

A Flood Outlook Statement is being issued for areas along the Lower Ottawa River (Arnprior to Hawkesbury).

Based on a large weather system from Texas that brought 15 to 75 mm of precipitation over much of the Ottawa River basin between April 11 and 13, levels and flows along the Ottawa River have begun increasing due to spring runoff. Residents along the shores of the Lower Ottawa River should be aware that throughout the spring freshet period water levels can rise rapidly at times and cause minor flooding in low-lying areas.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

SNC is extending the Water Safety Statement issued on April 4th, 2024.

Weather Forecast: Environment Canada has issued a forecast expecting up to 40 mm of rainfall by Saturday morning. This advisory follows elevated water levels resulting from last week’s snow and subsequent snowmelt.

Environmental Conditions: Snowmelt combined with anticipated rainfall Thursday continuing into Saturday may result in increased water levels and flows in rivers, potentially causing nuisance flooding in low-lying areas.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

Weather Forecast: Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Thursday with 5-10 cm of snow expected, changing to a mix of flurries and rain showers on Friday. This warning follows Wednesday’s precipitation mix with approximately
15 mm of rain and 10 cm of snow.

Environmental Conditions: Snowmelt due to warmer temperatures combined with anticipated rainfall Friday may result in increased water levels and flows in rivers, potentially causing nuisance flooding in low-lying areas.

SNC AGM Welcomes New Board Executive and Publishes New Annual Report

South Nation Conservation (SNC) held its Annual General Meeting at its office in Finch, Ontario on March 21st, 2024. The meeting highlighted key moments of SNC’s 76th year within the 2023 Annual Report, held the election of the SNC Board Executive for 2024-25 and confirmed the membership and Chair of the new Watershed Advisory Committee.

Water Conditions Statement: Water Safety — Lower Ottawa River

A Water Safety Statement is being issued for areas along the Lower Ottawa River (Arnprior to Hawkesbury).

This winter has been characterised by unseasonably warm temperatures, below-average precipitation in many locations and several melt events. As of mid-March, the amount of water in the snowpack is well below average for this time of year across the Ottawa River watershed. The snow is essentially gone in the south-east portion of the basin and well below average elsewhere for this time of year.
