Collaborative Efforts Target Invasive Phragmites in Eastern Ontario

The St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences (River Institute), South Nation Conservation (SNC), and Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) have teamed up to address one of Canada’s most aggressive invasive species, Phragmites australis, through a collaborative project supported by the Ontario Phragmites Action program’s Invasive Phragmites Control Fund.

Public Consultation on Updates to Drinking Water Source Protection Plan

The South Nation and Raisin Region Conservation Authorities are inviting the public to provide feedback on proposed updates to the local Drinking Water Source Protection Plan which was established in 2014. This document, developed under the Clean Water Act, outlines strategies to safeguard the source water that supplies municipal drinking water systems.

SNC Seeks Community Input on Draft Watershed Strategies

South Nation Conservation (SNC) is seeking public input on two draft strategies: the Watershed-based Resource Management Strategy (Watershed Strategy) and the Conservation Lands Strategy. All Conservation Authorities across Ontario are required to develop these strategies by December 31, 2024, as stated in Ont. Reg. 686/21 of the Conservation Authorities Act.

SNC Hosts TD Tree Days Community Planting Event in North Dundas

Thanks to the support of TD Tree Days, volunteers stepped into nature on Sunday, September 15th to help South Nation Conservation (SNC) plant 200 trees and shrubs along the South Nation River, in the Township of North Dundas.

This tree planting forms part of a larger restoration project at the Oak Valley Pioneer Park where significant erosion and bank slumping along the river prompted the need for remediation.

WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

Weather Forecast: Storms related to Tropical Storm Debby are expected to reach Ontario on Friday, bringing significant precipitation. Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts 50 to 75 mm of rainfall, with the potential for localized rainfall exceeding amounts of 100mm.

Environmental Conditions: Water levels and flows are currently normal for this time of year in the SNC jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario. The anticipated rainfall Friday continuing into Saturday morning may result in increased water levels and flows in rivers.

FLOOD WATCH DOWNGRADED TO WATER SAFETY STATEMENT

The Flood Watch issued on July 9th, 2024, has been downgraded to a Water Safety Statement.

Weather Forecast: SNC’s climate stations received between 30 and 50 mm of rain between Tuesday and Thursday morning and rainy conditions are expected to end Thursday afternoon.

Environmental Conditions: Water levels and flows remain elevated and are expected to decrease in the coming days.
