SOUTH NATION WATERSHED – South Nation Conservation (SNC) is updating the watershed statement “Flood Watch” issued on April 6th as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding the forecasted weather and the potential of flooding throughout the SNC jurisdiction.

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information regarding the forecasted weather and the potential of flooding throughout the SNC jurisdiction.

WATERSHED CONDITIONS: Flood Outlook Statement

April 3, 2014, 9:00 a.m. SOUTH NATION WATERSHED – South Nation Conservation cautions that watercourses are expected to rise over the week due to above-freezing temperatures.

Environment Canada forecasts a gradual increase in temperatures for the next week with a high of 8 OC on Friday April 4th. Nights are still colder with temperatures below zero. Next week nightly temperatures start rising slowly.

Currently water levels are at normal for this time of year.

Snowpack is decreasing slowly in height however the water equivalent remains steady.

SNC enhances client services

March 31, 2014 – Beginning April 3, South Nation Conservation will provide clients seeking permits and approvals with an extended service option at its headquarters in Finch.

Following a decision by the Board of Directors, as of April the office will remain open Thursdays beyond the regular 4 p.m. closing time until 7 p.m.

The board decided on the late opening following a recommendation from Angela Coleman, SNC Director of Properties and Approvals who observed that some municipalities within the Watershed have taken similar action.

Download four new SNC reports from our website. SNC produces a variety of resources to keep our partners, stakeholders, and residents informed about our Watershed trends and conservation efforts. We like to make our resources easily available while cutting paper use. Hardcopies are available on a print-on-demand basis.

SNC elects exec, honours team members, supports Alfred, Kemptville Colleges

March 24, 2014 – During South Nation Conservation’s annual meeting March 20, chairman Bill Smirle and vice-chair Doug Thompson were re-elected to their positions for another term. Joining them on the executive once again is past chairman Lawrence Levere.

The board spent most of the session hearing reports and business plans from staff representing various SNC departments. It was clear from presentations that 2014 will be another busy year in the 4,200 square-km South Nation jurisdiction.

Septic service providers hold information session

March 10, 2014 – South Nation Conservation held its annual information day for septic system contractors within much of its watershed recently and, as usual, there was an impressive turnout.

“There were 48 people in attendance,” said Monique Sauve, chief inspector for septic systems installed under SNC supervision. “There was a mixture of designers, installers, service and product providers, pumpers and engineers.”

New walking trail in Moose Creek

SNC is partnering with North Stormont and local residents to develop a community walking trail in Moose Creek. The 1.5 km trail through mature, re-growth forest will be made possible with partial funding from corporate partner, Laflèche Environmental Inc. (LEI). An easement with local resident Viola McRae will connect the trail to an existing easement held by North Stormont. Construction will begin this spring, starting at Simeon Lane and ending at County Road #6. SNC will coordinate the construction and annually inspect the trail for hazard trees.

SNC reminds ice fishers to clean up when the fun is done

March 7, 2014 – With the 2014 ice fishing season coming to a close across Eastern Ontario in March, South Nation Conservation is reminding enthusiasts to clean up when they remove huts or say goodbye to their favourite winter spots to drop a line.

All huts out on frozen bodies of water in the region – which were required to be registered with the Ministry of Natural Resources and display their numbers outside – must be removed by March 15. Abandoned huts can end up cluttering waterways when the ice thaws, an offence under the Public Lands Act.

UCPR funds SNC’S Woodlot Advisory Service

March 5, 2014 – Dignitaries and foresters gathered March 5 at the property of Roy Bureau near Vankleek Hill to officially launch a maximum $500 per woodlot subsidy process under the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program.

The United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) are contributing a total of $5,000 to woodlot owners to assist in preparing management plans under the Tax Incentive Program.

That’s in addition to $25,000 for delivery of South Nation Conservation’s Woodlot Advisory Service (WAS) across the counties.
