SNC Employs Local Summer Students
With support from Federal and Provincial funding agencies, South Nation Conservation (SNC) continues to lead the way in local summer student employment. In total, 8 students and recent graduates were employed by the Conservation Authority this summer.
“We’re proud to secure investments that contribute to our local economy and give talented students an opportunity to work in their field of study,” says SNC Communications Lead, John Mesman.
From working in the forest, to collecting environmental data or delivering environmental outreach programs, students become familiar with the inner-workings of a non-profit organization while getting exposed to a variety of career opportunities and experiences.
“The best part of my summer was spent teaching kids how to fish at our Youth Fish Camps” said Samantha DeVries, currently studying Elementary Education at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Québec.
Peter Martel, a Property and Approvals Assistant, said that he “loved being outside and getting his hands dirty.” Martel is studying the Environmental Technician program at Fleming College in Peterborough.
Some of this year’s summer students were Peter Martel, Carley Hutchinson, Nevin Guy, and Samantha DeVries. Collectively they are from Finch, Ingleside and Mountain.
“We look forward to hiring young and enthusiastic students every summer,” says Mesman. “They are our future generation of leaders and will hopefully go on to become good environmental stewards.”
