SNC Employs Local Summer Students
With support from Federal and Provincial funding agencies, South Nation Conservation (SNC) continues to lead the way in local summer student employment. In total, 8 students were employed by the Conservation Authority this summer.
“We’re proud to be giving talented students an opportunity to work in their field of study,” says SNC Communications Lead, John Mesman.
From working in the forest, to conducting environmental monitoring or delivering education programs, students become familiar with the inner-workings of a non-profit organization while getting exposed to a variety of career opportunities and experiences.
“The best part of my summer was spent teaching kids how to fish at our SNC Youth Fish Camps” said Samantha DeVries, currently studying Elementary Education at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Québec.
Tavish MacLeod, a Stewardship Student, said that he “loved being outside and getting his hands dirty.” MacLeod is studying the Environmental Technician program at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall.
This year’s summer students were Britney Bourdages, Meagan Casalino, Samantha DeVries, Alicia Howse, Tavish MacLeod, Raymond Co and Alexa Ouellette. Collectively they are from Alexandria, Carleton Place, Finch, Ingleside, Lunenburg, Ottawa, Scarborough and Rockland.
“We look forward to hiring young and enthusiastic students every summer,” says Mesman. “They are our future generation of leaders and will hopefully go on to become good environmental stewards.”
