SNC and Delta Waterfowl Partner for Annual First Hunt Program
For the eleventh year in a row, South Nation Conservation (SNC) has partnered with Delta Waterfowl to sponsor and administer its popular First Hunt Program, giving local kids between the ages of 12 and 15 the opportunity to safely develop sustainable hunting skills while under the direct supervision of qualified mentors.
Over a period of three weeks, youth participated in the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, the Ontario Hunter Education Course and were treated to presentations from local trappers and Conservation Officers prior to their first hunting experience.
The program registration is free, and all costs including meals, training, and manuals are covered by the organizers.
“The program is designed to provide young hunters with the knowledge needed to practice safe and ethical hunting,” said Mentor Philip Duncan, SNC’s Property and Approvals Assistant. “We’re training the conservationists of tomorrow to respect personal safety, wildlife, habitat, and private property.”
As this year’s hunting season fast approaches, SNC wishes to remind residents that a permit is required to hunt on the Conservation Authority’s 8,500 acres of forested lands, which house a range of hunting opportunities for species such as White-tailed deer, moose, waterfowl and upland game. The cost for the permit is $100, and its revenue helps offset the cost of hunting initiatives such as this youth hunt apprenticeship program.
Residents are also reminded to keep themselves and their pets safe outdoors by wearing high visibility clothing as areas of SNC-owned property may have multiple users at any given time. Hunting is not permitted on SNC’s Conservation Areas where managed trail systems exist.
