WATERSHED CONDITIONS: Flood Outlook Statement – South Nation Watershed

24-Apr-2019 24-Apr-2019

South Nation Conservation (SNC) has ended the Flood Watch issued on April 17, 2019, for the South Nation River and its tributaries.

Weather Forecast:
Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting rainfall of 15 to 20 mm this Friday, and an additional 5 to 10 mm Saturday through Sunday, April 28.

Environmental Conditions:
Since issuing the last statement on April 17, SNC rain gauges have recorded 20 to 35 mm of rain. Soil across the jurisdiction is saturated, and there is minimal to no snowpack remaining.

The SNC stream gauges have recorded an increase in water levels across the jurisdiction due to recent precipitation. Water levels have peaked and are now receding; levels remain above average in some parts of the jurisdiction for this time of year.

Risks:
The forecasted precipitation will increase water levels across the jurisdiction. Flooding may occur in low lying areas.

ACTION:
Residents are advised to stay away from rivers as the forecasted weather may rapidly increase river flows and banks might be unstable and slippery. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should also take the necessary precautions to protect their property.

  • Ensuring sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it.
  • Portable generator and backup pump.
  • Ensuring downspouts are clear and outlets are at least 3 m from dwelling.
  • Removing or securing items that might float away as flows increase.
  • Removing valuable items from basements or lower floors that could be subject
    to flooding.
  • Keep emergency phone numbers handy.
  • Familiarize yourself with your municipality’s emergency preparedness plan.

Duration:
This statement is in effect until Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change.
