WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT: WATER SAFETY
South Nation Conservation (SNC) cautions residents that water levels are expected to significantly increase in the upper portion(Township of Alfred and Plantagenet) of the South Nation watershed and the Ottawa River.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting periods of rain (15 mm to 20 mm) throughout the week. The water levels at the confluence of the South Nation and Ottawa Rivers are high; the additional precipitation may result in high water levels just upstream of this area in the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. Localized flooding may be observed. The water levels throughout the remainder of South Nation watershed are normal; therefore, flooding is not a concern at this time.
Additionally, the Ottawa River Regulation Board is forecasting water levels and flows may rise rapidly from Pembroke down to the Grenville/Hawkesbury area this week due to the forecasted precipitation combined with the high precipitation so far in April and ongoing snowmelt. Localized flooding may occur in these areas.
Residents are advised to stay away from watercourses where flows are high and where banks might be unstable, particularly in the Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. Parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.
SNC staff will continue to monitor the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program and will provide updates in the event conditions change.
SNC encourages the public to visit www.nation.on.ca and to also provide feedback with respect to changes in water-related conditions in their local areas. All feedback and photos can be sent to waterwatch@nation.on.ca, posted on our Facebook page (/SouthNationConservation), or Tweeted to us (@SouthNationCA).
