TWO CREEKS TO GET TRAIL UPGRADES, INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE

29-Mar-2013 04-Oct-2013

South Nation Conservation, South Dundas Township and the DIAMONDS Conservation Land Trust are hosting a public meeting April 9 to discuss upgrades at Two Creeks Forest Conservation Area located in South Dundas.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the South Dundas municipal hall in Williamsburg.

SNC has received $25,000 through the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund to cover the cost of the project that’ll enhance 4.5 km of existing trail and promote natural heritage features contributing to a healthy Great Lakes Basin.

“We’re looking for volunteers to help implement improvements to the Two Creeks trail and to install interpretive signage,” said Josee Brizard, SNC Team Leader, Forest Resources.

“It’s a chance for area residents to get outside in the spring and get close to their natural environment,” Brizard noted, adding that volunteers need only dress appropriately; necessary equipment will be supplied.

“Two Creeks is a public property and this is an opportunity for stakeholders - members of the public - to demonstrate their interest.”

Two Creeks is 500 acres of natural heritage land along County Road 2 between Morrisburg and Iroquois. It was acquired with the help of Ontario Heritage Trust and Lafleche Wetland Trust Fund after Domtar Inc. ceased operations in Cornwall and disposed of its woodlots several years ago.

Features include two tributaries of the St. Lawrence River, a provincially significant wetland, and more than 300 plant and animal species in nine distinct ecosystems.

“It’s a natural jewel that, thankfully, has been taken over by SNC for the public good,” Brizard explained. “Because of that, it’ll be protected in perpetuity.”

While hunting and motorized vehicles are prohibited, recreational opportunities abound in Two Creeks Forest Conservation Area. With location signage on the county road, a parking lot, and new footbridges, the acreage is accessible to most naturalists.
