Customers vote, Shell donates. $1 million awarded to environmental projects
Finch, Ontario – Today, Shell Canada will award $1 million to Canadian environmental projects, chosen by its customers. Through the Shell FuellingChange™ Program customers are invited to make any purchases at Shell service stations throughout Canada, collect Shell purchase receipts with voting codes, and vote for their favourite environmental projects on FuellingChange.com. To date, 8.4 million votes have been cast by customers!
“The great thing about FuellingChange is that it empowers environmental and not-for-profit organizations to reach out to Canadians and get them involved in building a sustainable future,” said Shell Canada’s president and country chair, Lorraine Mitchelmore. “FuellingChange is about being proactive and discovering what environmental projects our customers care about.”
Environmental projects pre-selected to participate in the FuellingChange program are eligible to receive funding at three different grant levels: $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000. In addition, those organizations not successful in the voting process receive $10,000 for their project. A total of 31 projects will receive funding, totalling $1 million.
After 6 months of dedication in reaching out to Canadians, the votes are in and South Nation Conservation (SNC) has been chosen to receive a grant of $50,000 from Shell Canada.
“SNC is delighted to have our Totally Turtles project benefit from the support of our residents and the FuellingChange program,” said SNC Fisheries Technician, Karen Paquette.
For seven years, SNC has been studying the behavior of Species at Risk turtles in its 4,000 square km drainage basin in Eastern Ontario. Turtles are a good indicator of a healthy and ecologically stable watershed. The Shell Canada funding will allow the SNC project to expand turtle habitat enhancement efforts, while minimizing threats to their population which include road mortality, nest damage and habitat loss.
South Nation Conservation works closely with its partner municipalities, government, individual landowners, and various community groups to maintain and improve the natural resources within one of the largest watersheds in the province.
Shell Canada will award another $1 million to environmental projects later in the year. For more information, visit www.fuellingchange.com.
