Current Projects
South Nation Conservation (SNC) works with municipal partners to study and map natural hazards, including areas at risk of flooding and erosion. These projects help improve our understanding of local watershed conditions, support informed land use planning, and help protect people, property and infrastructure.
Natural hazard mapping projects may include technical studies, field investigations, floodplain mapping and erosion hazard assessments. Public consultation is also an important part of the process, providing residents and property owners with opportunities to learn about the projects, review draft maps and share feedback.
Explore SNC’s current natural hazard mapping projects below to learn more about the studies, view available mapping and find project updates.
Protecting People and Property
South Nation Conservation (SNC) invites watershed residents living along South Castor River within the City of Ottawa and the United Counties of Stormont Dundas and Glengarry (SDG), to view draft floodplain mapping (or natural hazard maps).
These natural hazard maps have been developed on behalf of the City of Ottawa and SDG and will be used when updating Official Plans and zoning schedules, and when reviewing development applications to protect people and property from natural hazards and guide sustainable development activities.
Regulation areas included on draft maps include the greatest of whichever natural hazard is present: floodplain or riverine erosion. It's important to speak with the Conservation Authority when considering developing in these areas to determine what type of hazard or constraint may exist.
Development projects within natural hazard areas (like floodplains) require permission from the Conservation Authority before proceeding. Please visit SNC's Regulations Webpage to learn more about regulations made under the Conservation Authorities Act O.Reg 41/24 Prohibited Activities, Exemptions and Permits
Public Consultations
When updating natural hazard maps after completing a comprehensive study, Conservation Authorities will invite affected property owners to review draft maps and provide any comments during public consultations.
Consultations help update Regulation Areas where permission (through a permit) may be required for certain construction or shoreline development activities. Please note that these consultations do not replace any municipal requirements or public notices to update policies or zoning schedules
Residents and stakeholders with properties along South Castor River within the City of Ottawa and Counties of SDG are welcome to book a 1-on-1 meeting with SNC staff to learn more about the floodplain mapping project.

Maps
Final natural hazard mapping reports are added to SNC's website and the updated maps are added to SNC's public Geoportal.
The maps of South Castor River are not yet approved by SNC's Board of Directors and remain in draft form until after the public consultation period.
Please note that the "Regulation Area" is displayed on draft mapping. This area includes the greatest of either hazard: 1:100 year floodplain or riverine erosion hazard, plus a buffer. Examples will be shared during consultation meetings.

South Nation Conservation (SNC), together with local municipalities, will begin the South Nation River Natural Hazard Study to better understand flooding and other natural hazards along the South Nation River and nearby watercourses.
The study will help identify areas that may be vulnerable to flooding and support improved flood mapping, emergency planning, and the protection of homes, infrastructure, and communities.
Field Survey Work
As part of the study, SNC staff will be conducting field surveys in fall 2026. Staff will collect information to determine:
- River and stream channel depths and widths
- Bridge and culvert dimensions
Staff will generally access watercourses from public road allowances wherever possible. Where access to private property is required, staff may need to walk and work within the river or stream corridor. Property visits are expected to take approximately 30 minutes.
Property Access Permission
If your property is identified as requiring access for field work, SNC is requesting your permission to enter the property to complete the survey.
Your cooperation will help us develop a more complete understanding of flood risk in the community and support more accurate natural hazard mapping and emergency planning.
Study Area
The South Nation River Natural Hazard Study covers the South Nation River and nearby watercourses within the study area, including the North Branch of the South Nation River.
