Watershed Planning

Watershed Planning

Healthy watersheds are the foundation of strong communities — supporting clean water, natural habitats, agricultural productivity, and safe, sustainable development.

South Nation Conservation (SNC) works with municipalities and partners to deliver watershed planning initiatives that guide long-term environmental protection and land use decisions across the region.

What is Integrated Watershed Management?

Conservation Authorities use an integrated watershed management approach — considering land, water, natural features, and human activities as part of one connected system.

This approach brings together environmental, social, and economic considerations to ensure decisions today support a healthy and resilient watershed in the future.

By managing resources on a watershed basis, we can better understand how changes such as development, agriculture, or climate impacts affect water quality, flooding, habitat, and downstream communities.

Our Role

As a watershed-based organization, SNC provides the science, data, and technical expertise that municipalities rely on to support planning and decision-making.

Watershed planning work includes:

  • Assessing current conditions (water quality, natural heritage, land use, and climate risks)

  • Identifying key environmental challenges and opportunities

  • Evaluating future scenarios, including growth and climate change

  • Recommending strategies to protect natural systems and reduce risk

  • Supporting municipal planning processes with science-based guidance

Supporting Sustainable Communities

Watershed Plans help ensure that growth happens in a way that protects natural systems and reduces long-term risks such as flooding, erosion, and water quality impacts.

They also help municipalities:

  • Integrate environmental considerations into planning and infrastructure decisions

  • Protect natural heritage systems and water resources

  • Identify priority areas for restoration and stewardship

  • Plan for climate resilience and adaptation

Current Projects and Studies

SNC undertakes watershed studies and planning projects across the region to better understand local conditions and support informed decision-making.

These projects often include technical studies, field monitoring, and public and stakeholder engagement, ensuring local knowledge is reflected in the process.

Project-specific information, updates, and opportunities to get involved are provided below.
