Winter Recreation is in Full Swing at Select SNC Parks

With winter weather and snow packed trails, South Nation Conservation (SNC) is reminding visitors that over 25 km of recreational trails are waiting to be explored at Conservation Areas in Eastern Ontario.

Included in the trail network is the Two Creeks Forest Conservation Area near Morrisburg that has opened for winter recreation. SNC has recently completed tree management to help re-open the 4 km of trails that have been restricted over the last two years due to flooding, trail, and tree damage.

SNC Installs New Pollinator Meadows in North Dundas

South Nation Conservation (SNC) staff were busy as bees this Fall, completing the installation of over three acres of pollinator habitat in North Dundas. The new pollinator meadows planted by SNC, in partnership with Syngenta Canada, have created essential habitats and food sources for a range of pollinators, including native bees and pollinating insects. These meadows also enhance the biodiversity of the region and improve the local environment.

SNC Offers Winter Recreation at Select Conservation Areas

With winter weather approaching, South Nation Conservation (SNC) has begun closing its seasonal Conservation Areas and is removing safety booms and shoreline docks along rivers within the region.

SNC maintains seasonal Conservation Areas and municipal partner sites with river access officially between May and October each year and extends access into April and November when the weather and water conditions are safe for public use.

It’s That Time of Year Again – Place Your 2024 Tree Orders!

After a few record-breaking tree planting seasons across its 4,480 square-kilometre watershed jurisdiction in Eastern Ontario, South Nation Conservation (SNC) is calling out to property owners this Fall to start planning for their Spring 2024 tree planting projects!
 
SNC is currently booking site visits and accepting orders for locally sourced native trees and shrubs offered at reduced rates through a variety of planting programs administered by the Conservation Authority.

SNC Celebrates the Grand Opening of the Findlay Creek Boardwalk

Despite the rainy weather, project partners, community members and friends of South Nation Conservation (SNC) gathered at the new entrance of Ottawa’s Findlay Creek Boardwalk on October 21st, 2023, to officially open the recreational area to the public.

Thanks to support from Tartan and Tamarack Homes and $750,000 in funding from the Government of Canada through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund, SNC began work on the Findlay Creek Boardwalk Extension at the beginning of 2023.

SNC Recognizes Importance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30, 2023, marks the third National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, an important day for our Indigenous partners, locally and across the country. It also serves as a day of reflection, so that people can recognize the harmful legacy of the residential school system in Canada and collectively make the journey towards healing.

SNC Hosts TD Tree Days Community Planting Event in North Dundas

Thanks to the support of TD Tree Days, dozens of volunteers gathered on Sunday, September 17th to help South Nation Conservation (SNC) plant 280 trees at the Oak Valley Pioneer Park, in the Township of North Dundas.

The South Nation River at Oak Valley experiences significant erosion and bank slumping due to past river straightening activities, increased water velocities, and loss of tree cover. As a result, the riverbank between Cass Bridge and Oak Valley needs remediation to reduce erosion and sedimentation and to improve water quality and biodiversity.

SNC Offers Hunting Opportunities on Select SNC Lands this Fall

As summer fades and cooler temperatures move into Eastern Ontario, many of South Nation Conservation’s (SNC) watershed residents anticipate the start of the hunting season this Fall. Select SNC properties are accessible to the public for hunting and trapping opportunities, with permission from the Conservation Authority.

SNC owns and manages over 13,000 acres of community forests, wetlands, and grasslands across its 4,480 square-kilometre watershed jurisdiction; offering almost 9,000 acres of land used as hunting areas each year.
