Recreational canoeing and kayaking have become increasingly popular pastimes for Ontario residents. For those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, explore the beauty of nature, and get great exercise, all at an affordable price, there is no better family activity. South Nation River canoe and kayak routes are ideal outings for novice and experienced recreationalists alike.
The River meanders over hundreds of kilometers through some of Ontario’s most productive agricultural, farm, and forested lands. Along the course of these routes are exciting local attractions, which make the trip to Eastern Ontario all the more worthwhile. So grab your gear, and find out why so many people are embarking on canoe and kayaking trips on the South Nation River- the great, little river so close to home!
This guide breaks sections of the River into five separate, daylong trips for you and your friends and family to enjoy. Beginning in the Village of Spencerville, these routes continue downstream through the most accessible and navigable parts of the South Nation River. Our final route ends at Jessup’s Falls Conservation Area in Plantagenet, where the South Nation River empties into the Ottawa River. If you plan to make a trip over several days, please be aware that there is no camping along the South Nation River and arrangements for accommodations should be made ahead of time.
Times and distances are given for each trip; however, exact times and distances vary from person to person based on skill sets of paddlers, time of year, and water levels of the river. For specific information on conditions and water levels, it's best to contact South Nation Conservation when planning your trip.
To ensure a safe trip, please follow the map carefully and review the safety tips. Always be aware of changing conditions on the River and remember that there may be hazards that maps do not indicate.
