SNC WATER TRADING PROGRAM SHOWCASED AT MAJOR CONFERENCE

November 16, 2010

South Nation Conservation’s widely recognized expertise on what’s known as Water Quality Trading was once again put on international display at a recent conference held in Philadelphia.

General Manager Dennis O’Grady was asked to present a paper at the conference on SNC’s Total Phosphorous Management Program which has been in place for several years and studied by several other jurisdictions.

In a first for SNC, the paper will appear in the peer-reviewed “Journal of the American Water Resources Association” which is doing a special edition focusing on water quality trading. The paper has been examined by experts and deemed worthy of inclusion in the journal.

“South Nation was cited at the meeting as one of only two programs in the world successfully engaged in this type of trading,” said O’Grady, adding the conference drew hundreds of delegates from several countries, primarily the U.S. and Canada.

He explained the program is an approach that improves water quality at a lower cost to taxpayers while providing grants to farmers and other landowners to help implement measures which reduce the flow of contaminants into streams and rivers.

“The main conditions required to make it work are to keep it simple and to involve stakeholders in program design and delivery… basically, worry more about the people side than the technical aspects.”

In recent years, O’Grady and other senior SNC managers have become regular speakers at major environmental conferences, addressing Water Quality Trading and other topics.

“SNC has gained a sound reputation for being at the forefront of many important programs,” the GM said. “I’m fortunate to have a board of directors which understands the importance of sharing our knowledge with other conservationists in Canada and abroad.”
