With the South Nation River in the background at Cass Bridge, volunteers gather garbage picked up during last year’s Cache In – Trash Out.  The event was one of eleven awarded a River Grant from South Nation Conservation.

Again this year, South Nation Conservation is
supporting river-related events and festivals
by providing grants of up to $500 to eligible
organizations.

“Part of our responsibility is to provide
opportunities for residents of our watershed
to enjoy, learn from, and respect our natural
environment,” says Lawrence Levere,
Chairman of the SNC board of directors.
“The River Grant Program is an ideal way to do that, and also support event organizers and municipalities at the same time.”

The River Grant Program is available to non-profit organizations, groups and municipalities hosting events and activities in 2011 along the South Nation River. The maximum grant is $500 per event. Funding applicants must submit a one-page letter to SNC’s communications committee providing all relevant information on the proposed event. Successful applicants must provide a follow-up report on their event.

To be eligible, events must take place along or adjacent to the South Nation, St. Lawrence or Ottawa Rivers or their tributaries within the South Nation jurisdiction, or have a direct connection to the Rivers.  Events must also allow for public participation, either as participants or spectators.   Applications must be received no later than 30 days before the event.

Last year, approximately $4500 was awarded in support of 11 different events, ranging from fishing tournaments, festivals and educational events, to a musical recital held along the riverfront in Casselman.

“We’re especially pleased that many of the events are either fundraisers for various charities, or important stewardship projects like riverside garbage clean-ups,” adds Levere.  “We’d like to see applications for a wide range of events from right across the watershed.”

River Grant program applications can be downloaded from the South Nation Conservation website www.nation.on.ca.
