Building upon the popularity of South
NationConservation’s first-ever
Cache In/Trash Out (CITO) event held
last year, SNCITO2 is being planned
for April 30 at Jessup’s Falls
Conservation Area near Plantagenet.
It’s a spin on the high-tech treasure hunting
game played throughout the world by
adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices
known as geocaching. The basic idea is to find
containers hidden outdoors and share experiences online about the contents and the locations in which they were found.
With Cache In/Trash Out, the goal is to find recently placed geocaches while picking up garbage along the way. As was the case with last year’s even at Cass Bridge Conservation Area south of Winchester, the event is being organized by Geocachers of Eastern Ontario with the assistance of a $500 River Grant provided by SNC.
Last year, SNCITO attracted 85 participants from across the region, as well as some visitors from Nova Scotia, said SNC’s Tim Jackson who’s coordinating the event. With 40 geocaches to locate, they were dispatched in teams to 14 different cleanup sites and collected everything from fencing materials, a washing machine and even a vintage Volkswagen Beetle… in all, a full truck of scrap metal and several truck loads of mixed trash.
As did last year’s event, SNCITO2 begins at 8 am with a full catered breakfast of pancakes, real maple syrup, bacon, sausages and more.
People of all ages including families are invited. At 8:40 am, they’ll be split into cleanup teams and be assigned to sites in the surrounding area; with participants carpooling, team geocaching and trash collection will occur until 1:15 pm, followed by rendezvous back at Jessup’s Falls for a picnic lunch, awarding of geocaching-themed prizes, photos and closing comments.
Interested participants will have an opportunity to purchase the 2011 SNC Geocoin expected to be available in time for the event. This is the second custom, oversized coin issued by South Nation specifically to be used in geochaching.
“The original SNCITO was very successful and we’re expecting a good turnout this time,” Jackson said. “It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels to get outside, learn a lot while having fun, meet new people, and contribute to preserving the local environment.”
