South Nation Conservation will commemorate International Year of Forests – 2011 by inviting the public to learn more about forestry in Canada and around the world through film.
“Our Forests … Our Future: Forestry Around the World” is a forest film screening to be held in the Watershed Room at South Nation Conservation offices in Finch on Wednesday, June 15th from 7 to 9 pm.
The United Nations proclaimed 2011 as International Year of Forests to raise awareness of conservation and sustainable management and development of all types of forests all around the world.
In keeping with that theme, the screening will feature eight film shorts from Canada, Australia, Sweden, the Philippines, Guatemala and Tanzania, all of which outline efforts and programs designed to sustainably manage the world’s trees and forests.
Film Screening:
-
Canada: Log Driver’s Waltz (3:05 minutes)
-
Canada: Haliburton Forest (5:35 minutes)
-
Australia: New South Wales State Forest (1:40 minutes)
-
Sweden: The Swedish Forestry Model (8:11 minutes)
-
Philippines: Forest Regeneration in the Philippines (11:05 minutes)
-
Guatemala: A Responsible Forestry Management Model in Guatemala (6:42 minutes)
-
Tanzania: A Beginning in Pemba. Community Forests International, Tree Planting in Pemba, Tanzania (12:06 minutes)
-
United Nations Address: Felix Feinkbeiner (9:00 minutes)
The film screening is the second SNC event this month designed to raise awareness and understanding of the value of trees and forests. This week, the annual South Nation Conservation forestry tour focused on old growth sites and stewards of privately owned forests in the South Nation Watershed.
“We’re pleased to work with the public locally to mark the International Year of Forests” says Barclay Cormack, chairman of the South Nation Conservation Forestry Committee. “These films will provide an insight into how forestry and forestry programs are viewed in different parts of the world.”
There is no admission for the screening. Light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
