The Rapids Clubtail, Eastern Pondmussell, Rainbow Mussell, Bridle Shiner and Pugnose Shiner!
Odd names all, and they all share something in common: They’re five species at risk found in the watersheds of Eastern Ontario and all are part of a joint study designed to increase knowledge and awareness of both the creatures and their habitats.
South Nation Conservation, Rideau Valley Conservation, Mississippi Region Conservation, Cataraqui Region Conservation, Bay of Quinte Conservation and the City of Ottawa - funded by $87,450 from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and with participation from the Ministry of Environment - to inventory the species and establish a threat level at study sites.
Stream surveys will be conducted at minimally impacted sites across each partner’s respective watershed. Established protocols will be used to collect data and water quality parameters will be measured at each site, including total phosphorous, nitrates alkalinity and metals.
Once all data is collected and analyzed following the year-long study, landowners will be provided with a summary report of what has been found in their streams.
Providing an in-kind contribution to the project of $24,616, SNC is in charge of relaying funds to each partner, of design, printing and distribution of any publication connected to the project, and is coordinating the final report.
