BOOK YOUR SNC FALL WATERSHED TOUR SEAT NOW

September 22, 2011

It may be the most fun you’ll ever have on a bus.

Departing Finch at 8 a.m. Oct. 5, it’s South Nation Conservation’s 8th annual fall bus tour of several environmental enhancement projects in the east end of its 4,000 square km watershed.

Participants will tour parts of Prescott-Russell and SD&G and receive descriptions and updates of the projects from SNC field staff. A bag lunch and refreshments will be provided, with 4 p.m. being estimated return time. Comfortable casual clothes are recommended; open-toed shoes and high-heels are to be avoided.

Starting at SNC offices at 38 Victoria Street in Finch, the tour is free. It’s another method that SNC uses to create awareness and keep watershed residents informed of its environmental work on their behalf, said South Nation Water Quality Coordinator Ronda Boutz.

Boutz added that there’s no better way to gain an understanding of the role SNC fills in the region than to come out for a first-hand look. She urged those interested to book quickly by calling 877-984-2948, ext. 251: “The bus is filling quickly, with remaining seats awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.”

She pointed out that the regular spring and fall tours have been gaining in popularity in recent years as public interest in water quality and conservation in general has grown.

Several informative stops are planned, including a cemetery erosion project at St. Albert, fencing, alternate watering and well decommissioning projects, the Lemieux and St. Isidore landslide sites, Larose Forest for a briefing on woodlot management, Cobbs Lake Creek to look at flood forecasting, Springbrook Creek cold streams project, drinking water source protection at Wendover, fisheries monitoring at Jessup’s Falls, a hog farm shelterbelt project, the Alfred Bog, and manure and milkhouse storage projects.

While the agenda is a full one, some of the items involve short roadside stops where participants remain on the bus, Boutz explained.
